Cardinal linked to Los Angeles abuse cover-up to take part in papal selection

LOS ANGELES | Mon Feb 11, 2013 6:00pm EST

(Reuters) - A former Los Angeles Catholic archbishop who was stripped of all public duties after being linked to efforts to conceal child sex abuse by priests said on Monday he planned to participate in the process to elect a successor to Pope Benedict XVI.

The announcement by Cardinal Roger Mahony, which angered a prominent victims support group, came less than two weeks after 12,000 pages of church files unsealed under court order showed Mahony worked to send priests accused of abuse out of state to shield known abusers from law enforcement scrutiny in the 1980s.

"I look forward to traveling to Rome soon to help thank Pope Benedict XVI for his gifted service to the Church, and to participate in the Conclave to elect his successor," Mahoney, 76, said in a statement released on Monday by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.

Benedict surprised the world's Catholics earlier in the day by announcing his plan to retire at the end of this month.

and it's not a new thing. What's new is victimized children speaking out when they become adult and find their voices. A combination of lifelong shame and reverence for clergy is no longer working for Rome.

The next pope will be corrupt conservative, selected from and by a panel of corrupt conservatives.

Catholics need to follow England's lead and cut themselves off from Rome. The hierarchy is irretrievably corrupt and has been for centuries.

Just heard a story that there is going to be a significant schism here between the old school and those that want to see things changed.

Should be a great show.

Where he can live in gracious retirement like Cardinal Law, and not have to face a court in Los Angeles.

There are people out there that are still suffering the abuse of these so called men of god.
So I need someone to tell me why there should be a statute of limitations on these crimes
especially with all the cover-up

These men and others should all be in prison

But one never knows with rug.

I totally agree with you. I think that these men being able to get away with this is loathsome, but I have listened to the best plaintiff's attorneys handling these cases, and it appears that there is nothing they can do at this point.

What we need to do is to see if the current laws should or could be changed so this doesn't happen again.
