Donald Trump’s bad Catholic day
Although Donald Trump is by no means a Catholic, a strange twist of fate nevertheless left the GOP frontrunner with a very bad Catholic day on Wednesday, watching his standing placed in jeopardy with both the Catholic right and left.
No matter the religious affiliation of a political candidate in America, he or she has to reckon with the fact that Catholics account for about 20 percent of the countrys voting-age population, and theyve sided with the winner in most presidential elections.
A day in which one of those candidates managed to lose ground with both main ideological camps in Americas Catholic electorate, therefore, cant be a good one.

(3,817 posts)I was amazed they didn't have more security. But then, maybe it's like the Secret Service. You can't see it.
But I do agree with you; the criticism won't affect him a bit.
And as an historical note, many ancient cities have walls around them. York, England, comes to mine.

From what I've read, their plainclothes guys are very much like the Secret Service.

(3,817 posts)But there's a faction of Catholics who hate the Pope. It's amazing. Such vitriol.
I would LOVE for Trump to lose the Catholic vote because of this, believe me. Your lips to God's ears, as they say.

(18,470 posts)All that stuff about obeying every last little thing the Pope says ever went right out the door when Francis got the job.
These are people where I live who if you disagreed with anything, and I do mean anything, that John Paul II or Benedict said immediately branded you as a fake Catholic/Christian. Now all of a sudden these same people go on about how they don't have to listen to Francis and very disrespectful towards him.

(6,843 posts)but that encompasses the whole leadership of the Church. Obviously when the Pope speaks ex-Cathedra you are not free to disagree, but that does not happen too often.

(430 posts)The modifier(adjective) here is 'Catholic', the noun 'Republican'. When i have encountered them, there is no question that Republican ideology trumps Catholicism/Christianity. Remember, the chief pillar of American Republicanism is hypocrisy. One of the current items of propaganda/bullshit is that if John F. Kennedy was alive to-day, he would be a Republican.

Otherwise yeah Trump would be a second Rodrigo Borgia.
