Catholic Bishops Object to Trump on Immigration

Some Catholic leaders have raised objections to the president-elect’s plans to deport millions.

Catholic bishops are objecting to President-elect Donald Trump's plans to deport millions of immigrants who are in the country illegally, and halt or slow the acceptance of Middle Eastern refugees.

"This should not be happening in America," Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles told a congregation two nights after Trump's surprise election victory. "We are not this kind of people. We are better than this."

On Monday, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops argued that serving people fleeing desperate conditions "is part of our identity as Catholics."

"We stand ready to work with a new administration to continue to ensure that refugees are humanely welcomed without sacrificing our security or our core values as Americans," the bishops said. "A duty to welcome and protect newcomers, particularly refugees, is an integral part of our mission to help our neighbors in need."
