The real story behind Hunters, Al Pacinos new nazi-hunting Amazon seriesHunters, the new show co-produced by Jordan Peele and created by David Weil for Amazon Prime, tells the story of a crew of Nazi hunters in 1970s America. They are led by a mysterious man named Meyer Offerman, who has a thick Yiddish accent and is played by none other than Al Pacino.
The series has garnered mixed reviews and raised questions about the ethics of Jews taking violent revenge. But theres another lingering question: Were there that many Nazis in America in the 1970s that needed to be hunted down?
The show, which stars a gaggle of Jewish stars Logan Lerman, Saul Rubinek, Josh Radnor and Carol Kane, who all play Nazi hunters is very much an over-the-top fictionalization. It boasts an aesthetic thats more comic book than history book, but its stories and plotlines are based on quite a few true events.
So lets break down the fact from Nazi fiction about the post-Holocaust melodrama.

Murder or mitzvah? Amazons Hunters grapples with the morality of Jews killing Nazis.
This is not murder, this is mitzvah.
Thats a quote from Meyer Offerman, a wealthy Holocaust survivor with a thick Yiddish accent played by Al Pacino, in the first episode of Amazon Studios Hunters, a hyped new show about a diverse band of Nazi hunters in 1970s New York City that debuts Friday on the streaming service.
The blood-soaked series boasts a cast packed with Jewish actors, many with close personal connections to the Holocaust. Those actors say they are looking forward to having viewers join them in grappling with the ethical puzzle embedded in Meyers quote.
The center of the series really revolves around the moral, ethical question about Does it take evil to fight evil? Do you have to be a bad guy in order to effectively combat the bad guys? Logan Lerman, who plays the shows protagonist Jonah Heidelbaum, says in a phone interview from Los Angeles. Im really curious to see what peoples responses are.
The show, which was co-produced by Jordan Peele the acclaimed writer and director behind the horror blockbusters Get Out and Us whirls into motion after Jonahs grandmother is murdered in her Brooklyn apartment. Jonahs quest to discover the perpetrator brings him into contact with Meyer, who has assembled an Oceans 11-style team with members whose specialties range from combat to disguise. Jonah fits in immediately as a code-breaker because of his ability to recognize written patterns.

(16,306 posts)3. I've watched a couple episodes so far.
It's ok, Pacino's accent is horrible and I find it distracting. I think the violence is a little gratuitous, I really didn't need more reasons to hate nazis. The campiness is a little offputting, like when they went comic book style to introduce the team.
They developed good villains though, and the camera work is really good. I'm a sucker for a period piece.
