The destruction radius if Asteroid DA14 had hit Toronto (Original Post)

(2,252 posts)1. I haven't found the source of this graphic in the post...
One article suggested it was put together by a couple of 'former astronauts' - http://news.nationalpost.com/2013/02/15/graphic-the-destruction-radius-if-asteroid-da14-had-hit-toronto-and-other-fun-facts-about-space-rocks-hitting-the-earth/
But some former astronauts want to give the world a fighting chance.
Theyre hopeful Fridays cosmic coincidence Earths close brush with a 150-foot asteroid, hours after the 49-foot meteor struck in Russia will draw attention to the dangers lurking in outer space and lead to action, such as better detection and tracking of asteroids.
I also found a similar graphic with a much smaller radius of destruction from 4 days ago, I suspect prepared before the Russian meteoroid, here http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blogs/geekquinox/asteroid-2012-da14-hit-toronto-175401804.html

Anybody know the original sources and data for the graphics??
Thanks for the post, IC.

to 50 Hiroshimas. I think the revision of damage is realistic the one that missed us wouldn't have broken up .

And the circle seems to be centered on Hamilton, not Toronto like they say. Of course, the paper is owned by Rupert Murdoch-wannabe Conrad Black - so they're not too keen on getting the facts straight.

(360 posts)4. Weight is an issue.
I hate to say it you can't figure out a impact radius without having a pretty good idea of the weight of the object in question. But they indicated it was unknown on the graphic. Is this a case of the left hand not talking to the right hand?
