Can't really prove unless we send a probe to test. Charon's poles are cold enough in winter to precipitate molecules thought to be in Pluto's atmosphere, and when spring comes around, UV radiation can cause chemical reactions that would darken those molecules and prevent them from evaporating away into space.
The south pole of Charon is likely similarly stained, but it was not imaged as it is in darkness now.

Most probably true, but "discovered" is probably over-selling the theory to generate views. Cool in any case, but blaming it on the Tholins sounds somehow zenophobic to me...
