Fossil of new dinosaur species found in Southwestern China

Last update: 13/09/2018

KUNMING, Sept 13 (Bernama) -- Chinese scientists have found the fossil of a new dinosaur species in China's southwestern Yunnan Province, Xinhua news agency reported on Thursday.

The new species named Yizhousaurus sunae, known in Chinese as Sunshi Yizhou dinosaur, after the Chinese scientist Sun Ailing for her great contribution to vertebrate paleontology.

The findings were recently published by the journal Scientific Reports.

Measuring seven metres in length, the fossil was unearthed in Lufeng County in 2002 and could date back to some 180 million years ago, said Zhang Qiannan, the paper's first author and doctoral candidate with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Whenever it says "new dinosaur discovered" and it turns out it's only its fossilized remains, I always feel let down.
