(1,298 posts)And for me, it's the best movie he's made. He won the NY and LA Film Critics' awards that year, but then the Oscar went to Mel Gibson for Braveheart.

(21,991 posts)The banter between the crew and mission control is very relaxing. While listening I actually forgot that something really serious is about to happen. Mission control just started talking about requesting that the crew stir the oxygen tanks -- I snapped out of what I was doing like "oh shit!"

(13,878 posts)I read Lovells book about it, and everything else Ive read said the movie was very accurate and factual. After the successful return, most of the engineers and people involved said it was probably never more than a 10-20% chance that they would get back alive.
One of the most heroic stories of my lifetime.

(975 posts)He was one of kindest and most intelligent person I have ever met. A very distinguished American and gentleman.
On the Apollo 8 lunar orbital mission he saw an interesting lunar mountain which he dubbed Mt. Marylin after his wife. I asked him if it was still called Mt. Marylin? It wasnt. The international Astronomical Union named it something else.
