***Mes Aynak Update***

A meeting will be held tomorrow.

My friend has written his latest report, published by United States Institute of Peace which includes the consideration of Mes Aynak.

The site has been left to the elements and the archaeologists have left due to the lack of financial support for the project.

Some of the artifacts have been recovered but many, many more remain at the site awaiting excavation.

The good news is the mining company has also left.

The next obstacle is the new Afghan Oligarchy.

Sound familiar? Disaster capitalism? Shock Doctrine? Anyone?

Rich in natural resources—ferrous and nonferrous metals and strategic minerals in particular—Afghanistan faces a dual threat as international troops withdraw and international aid declines. On the one hand are inadequate government revenues. On the other is the resource curse that affects so many low-income countries. This report, drawn from case studies of five ongoing Afghan mining operations, addresses resource exploitation, its impact on the political economy and internal conflict, and possible ways forward.

Thank you to all those DUers who have helped by keeping this issue alive.

This is a significant site for so many reasons, the crossing and surviving of so many different souls, religions, languages. The first time I learned of it I felt connected to it. Please join me in wishing All The Best to Javed and his supporters for the meeting!

Hopefully the Afghan people will be able to build a government and social structures to avoid the exploitation of their human and mineral resources.
