The world's oldest known images made from pixels have been discovered, revealing prehistoric people used the same technique developed 38,000 years later by artists such as Van Gogh.
Pictures found on an ancient hoard of 16 engraved limestone blocks were created with small dots used to create a larger image.
The method, now known as pointillism, was developed in the 1880s and later adopted by leading 19th and 20th century artists including Vincent Van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Camille Pissarro and Roy Lichtenstein.
But the remarkable discovery of ancient images of mammoths and horses by archaeologists during an excavation at France's Vézère Valley have confirmed the technique was used thousands of years earlier.
