Walmart should change its name to STORE!
Just a thought. But it has never made any sense to me why they get to have a monopoly on deities... AND cheap crap.

I think it's more of a monopoly on crap and cheap deities.

In the spirit of conversation, and not to spoil your joke, iirc the christian god's has many names:
YHWH, Yahweh, Yehova, Elohim, El, and/or Adonai.
Jehovah being a bad mistranslation. Funny how badly the x-ian churches butcher the names of their god and his mortal avatar (Yeshua...not Jesus). They know better but don't care I guess?
YHWH supposedly it means "I am." El and Elohim is actually a reference to pagan god of the Canaanites (and a direct reference to Judism's pagan roots ). Adonai simply means "the lord."
I find it interesting that if you actually read the torah part of the bible and know the history of the name of god its pretty obvious that the early Jews believed in many gods. Elohim obviously started out as a protector god of the jews, then morphed into the king of the gods, and then became the only god. He constantly refers to himself as "we" and talks about the gods of other coutries as if they were real. There is of course a big difference between "you will have no god before me" and "I am the ONLY god."
Of course not many believers like to acknowledge this.

(53 posts)Seriously, though. I know. I grew up with several jewish friends. I guess they use the other names because Yaweh (isn't that the same as Jah) is forbidden to be spoken aloud. Whatever. It's all crazy to me. I always try to learn more about the psychosis that is religion by engaging those who suffer from this affliction in rational conversation. It just never seems to work out the way I want it to. But, hey... I was lucky enough to be raised a heathen. So I just tell myself, "There, but for the grace of Dog, go I".\m/

(53 posts)god once told him to fuck the dog. And you don't say no to god! Jesus tells him if he doesn't quit smoking he is going to hell. Needless to say, every time he fails he worries more about hell than his health. But 2000 years ago they would have called him PROPHET! Nowadays his doctors call him schizophrenic.

(18,219 posts)You are really entertaining me. Loved the observation of your friend who would have been called "prophet" 2000 years ago.
And it is hilarious that you try to engage believers in rational conversation. What a surprise that it never works out that way.

(53 posts)my prophet friend is far out. Not only do god and jesus talk to him, the voices told him to eat his own shit. He claims that his breath still stinks a year later!
He is on meds now and not THAT far out anymore, but jesus is still there... watching... waiting!

(18,219 posts)to deal with a schizophrenic. But, as you said, he is far out. I am sure that there are many funny/sad stories.
You will have to convince him that god and Jesus does not exist...just to save him from any further embarrassment from that corner.

(53 posts)I tell him that the cure for all that guilt is to just not believe in that shit.
It's just so sad that he had to be indoctrinated with that stuff and then turn out to have such a serious illness.
Blind faith is a mental illness in itself.
He says he'll pray for me to find the light.
He's a good guy, though. So I let it slide. In fact, I'm gonna go watch a movie with him right now. l8r

(18,219 posts)But I just tell them that I have found the light, and I am content. I tell them that the light that I have found is living life to the fullest, enjoying nature, and loving life...because I believe that this is my only chance to do it right.
Hope you enjoyed the movie.
