Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumNothing against you, but
atheists should keep their "beliefs" to themselves.
Because atheists can't be trusted. Oh, I don't mean YOU, I mean the "other ones".
These are a few of the comments I heard today when we had a discussion about this poll:
While 35 percent of respondents said they would be less likely to support a presidential candidate who had an extramarital affair, 53 percent of Americans indicated that not believing in God -- the trait viewed most negatively of the 16 tested -- would make them unsupportive of a candidate.
In accordance with a widely cited study by the University of Minnesota, which found atheists to be the most disliked and distrusted minority group in the nation, only 5 percent of respondents said they would be more likely to vote for a secular candidate.

Did you notice---the most disliked and distrusted minority group in the nation? Muslims beat us out by a hair. LGBT beat us by a long shot.
So ask me again....why do I get so upset????

(1,918 posts)I hate when I hear those comments. But they are all too common.
I'd gladly vote for someone who understands that the here and now is all we've got and we can't ask for forgiveness at the end of our lives, hoping to completely wipe the slate clean if our mistakes and misbehaviors. And I'd prefer we have a president who doesn't feel that it's okay to just willy-nilly send our troops into wars because if they die, at least they go to heaven. I'd vote atheist for the sake of the country.

I have to agree that I would prefer a leader who doesn't think that praying will solve all the problems we face. But who am I!

(1,918 posts)I hate all that wishful thinking. As Dan Barker sings, "Nothing fails like prayer." Now that song is stuck in my head.

(1,918 posts)I think the song is on his Friendly Neighborhood Atheist album. They occasionally play it on the FFRF podcasts.

(18,219 posts)I was "so much better" for the people who preferred to think that there really were no atheists...so when people refused to admit it, they could continue to delude themselves that "everyone" believed the same as they did....well among the other things that they delude themselves about.

(33,982 posts)If I must be the most hated minority, so be it. Fuck 'em.
It doesn't disappoint me so much that as an atheist I am knee-jerk mistrusted by society, as much as it warms my heart to see groups so blatantly and openly discriminated against in the past, climbing the social acceptance ladder.
Go, climb. I'll be along shortly, because society hasn't, and will never break me.

(18,219 posts)I need to look at it that way. So you are one of those glass half full types?
Your last line is truly inspiring.....I like it.

(11,175 posts)The United States will someday elect an openly agnostic or atheistic President. I'd make it 50-50 whether it will happen before the 22nd century, though.

(6,476 posts)We are making very good progress in my opinion and if we all stand up and support eachother we'll prevail that much quicker. Say NO to religious nonsense and give no quarter to their incessant whining.

(9,019 posts)We need serious people in politics, not those who keep praying and praying for something and never stop to think it's all bullshit.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)I also prefer to have people in politics who will find answers, not pray for them. It is like if you pray for help, you are absolved of actually doing something.
Oh well, it is god's will.
