Here is a theme that has found its way into novels, films, and even comic books. The tragic story of a man who falls in love with a nun.

She doesn't feature the whole story, but includes several pages and panels to give you the gist of it. Her commentary is worth reading. Among other things, she points out how they ruin the surprise ending by featuring the spoiler on the cover. I guess they felt they needed that image to sell the comic.




And now, here's my tale. The nuns at the parochial school I attended were old. By the sixties, there just weren't enough young women willing to take up the order. The school even had to resort to hiring lay teachers to complete the staff. One magical year, however, a young nun joined the faculty. She was brought on to teach music, play the organ at mass, and to conduct the choir. That she loved her role could be seen every time she performed. Her feet would run over the bass pedals, her hands would fly over the keyboard, and her whole body would conduct the choir. Everyone loved her. She even liked my singing and encouraged me to take the lead in our celebrations. Then my voiced changed and that was the end of that career.

Here's what really set her apart. She always wore civilian clothes when she wasn't conducting church business. I have a vivid memory of her heading downtown wearing a blue dress that complimented her figure and revealed her legs. This was the swinging sixties after all. The next year, she was gone. Whether she just transferred to another parish or left the order, I can't say. What I can confirm, is that when I see a story like this one, I can give it the official cartoonist stamp of credibility.
