Related: About this forumAm I abrasive? I'm kind of starting to think the jury system sucks.
I've gotten at least a few PMs (and in one case, was told in the thread) that my posts have been alerted on. I never intentionally try to be mean, I just don't like to mince words. So far, I've never gotten a post deleted, but it's only a matter of time before I get a bad jury.
I never understood why people got so butthurt at the jury system, but I'm starting to get it.
Have you ever had a post you thought was innocuous alerted on or deleted?

(17,195 posts)Hell, this post will probably be alerted on as belonging in meta. But not by me.

(111,256 posts)I know I've gotten downright rude about some alerts lately, "alert" is being used as a substitute for the "unrec" button.
Evo, unpopular beliefs (or lack thereof) will continue to be alerted on. It just means you're doing it right.

(3,894 posts)But yes, seems analysis and critical thinking based on reality are often not appreciated here. I guess it's the "bleeding heart" part of bleeding heart liberals? I find that I'm a progressive/liberal from an entirely logical and completely analyzed position, and that it seems it's good enough for some.

(13,029 posts)having the post itself hidden, because everyone can still read it anyway, and more will want to just to see what the fuss was about. It's getting blocked from the thread after that that's the bitch.
And yes, more passion than smarts would describe a fair number of people here. Thought (critical or otherwise) doesn't always enter into it.

(4,549 posts)If they're getting alerted on, that's probably because they're hitting the mark. It seems that at least a few juries agree with you.

(34,582 posts)Yesterday, someone called Bill Kristol "bagel boy". I alerted and asked the poster for clarification. She then said that BK reminded her of a young Jewish boy. I alerted again. The first was hidden, the second stayed.

(13,029 posts)You're talking to the original 40 grit man here. But you never know what will rub someone the wrong way, or get a jury seeing red.
I had a post hidden for using the term "hysterical rant", which the alerter termed as "sexist language", and the jury bought.
And yes, the jury system here sucks.

(18,219 posts)is it was not for Laconicsax telling me about it. It was a stupid alert and I was lucky that all the jurors agreed. I know how you feel, though. I was flabbergast.
So, no, you are not abrasive....or at least no more so than most of us. There will always be people who will not like what we have to say, and this is their way of saying they don't like it---you know, as opposed to actually engaging you in discussion. I have not had a post hidden yet, but I will not let it ruin my day if it happens. Some days, I probably deserve it.

(16,232 posts)because they DON"T hide enough posts.
Not yours, necessarily. Can't remember any that would piss me off - and a whole damn lot pisses me off lately! - but the laissez-faire anything goes attitude where one can be as crass, rude, insensitive, obviously - um -non-DU mindset - and it's just A-OK.
IF the the qualifications to serve on the jury changed. IF the anonymity factor were removed. IF a juror were required to explain themselves. IF some kind of tracking off how they vote on what - or on whom - as the case may be - and any pattern discerned that could possibly point out certain prejudices or proclivities on the part of the juror, then MAYBE it could possibly be a remotely acceptable idea. If we were all ALL DEFINITELY Democrats - good hard-core liberal Democrats - then maybe. But too many interlopers, trolls, and down-right troublemakers who get asked to serve, imo. And they love to wreak havoc.

(21,132 posts)Where the purpose of the thread was to come up with a pro-flowers advertisement campaign that would match Rush Limaugh's misogyny.
Apparently I did a good job, because I was alerted on for being a misogynist...
I am still not sure who was more idiotic--the alerter or the jurors.

(49,533 posts)And its huge flaws are what keep me from donating to DU anymore. The mod system was far from perfect, but it was much better than the crap we have now. Maybe if mods could be brought back as "judges" for the jury system - when a jury makes a decision, it could be brought to the attention of a judge to review and perhaps overturn some of the ridiculous decisions? Maybe a judge would only be needed if the alerted-upon person (or the alerter) wanted to appeal a decision that wasn't in their favor? I dunno.

(5,649 posts)I have been on some stupid alert juries, though, so I wouldn't sweat it. There are actually some people who will alert on every single post from another person, just to see them get hidden. A lot of people use the jury system as a popularity contest and face it, most of the time, atheists don't win popularity contests. I don't think I'm on anyone's radar because I've only ever gotten one PM that said "here is the result of your jury" (6-0 to leave).
When I end up on seriously stupid "revenge alert" type juries, I almost always send the results to the poster. Not to show them that they are abrasive, but to inform them that their post was alerted on.

(2,307 posts)I don't think I you were the person being alerted. But, if memory serves me, I voted to leave all of them. Mostly people getting their feelings hurt. All were in the middle of long threads which were growing hotter by the post. With one exception I felt the reply somewhat fit the comment being made.
I really wouldn't worry about it.
