(51,591 posts)It is so dry that any moisture from Nimbus clouds dries up before it can reach the actual ground. It is REALLY bad here... bugs, allergies, local crops are all effected. Any initial rain, like what we are getting now, runs off the baked ground. It is as if the earth/soil is asphalt. We need slow, steady rain over a long period of time for it to sink in and make a difference.
My dog forgets what rain is. I let her go outside and she just stood there like, "What is this wet stuff?".

(21,646 posts)I think that's how it's suppose to go in the fall out there . I'm in the Midwest
My cousin in AZ told me over the holidays when we spoke via the phone that he couldn't even remember the last time it rained where he is. Same there also. Told me some of his plants he never has to water in fall needed a hosing because they were affected.
Here in Chi Town -9 last week with Siberia like wind chills feeling like its even colder
Now This week, +52 predicted for this Thursday
Enjoy your rain hope it helps and more comes for you

(51,591 posts)We are FAR below the norm. Climate Change is going to be weather of "extremes". Last year we had 150% of normal rain. Hot, cold, dry, wet will be one or the other in the future. No "grey" area. This is true for the entire planet. This is the future and our govt is doing nothing!

(21,646 posts)But just that little area got what's normal usually for the whole region yes ?
including I think that is where the rain comes for my cousin in AZ usually the monsoons at this time of the year. Not this year as I mentioned. Unless I have the wrong time of the year ....
Anyway pass some of that rain on to AZ where he sorely needs it.
Yep we are in temp extremes here 60 degrees swing in a week is extreme !
The current regime is increasing the problem with thier renewed focus on fossil fuels which is even worse than ignoring it - they are IMO accelerating climate change

(51,591 posts)start with some rain during the fall months. This year we got ZERO. So we started this "rainy season" at a loss.
Australia is HOT and 20 degrees above normal now. Europe has had bizarre weather there much like we have had here. Droughts, fires, storms taking odd tracks producing emergencies, etc.
The Climate Change deniers know that they are lying through their teeth. They are not stupid, they are greedy sociopaths who do not care how much harm they knowingly cause millions of people as long as they benefit their own personal agenda which is money and power.

(3,163 posts)July thru early Sept is monsoon season; rain in the form of afternoon thunderstorms. Eastern San Diego county gets some of the effect, but it seldom crosses the mountains to the coastal areas, so San Diego usually goes all summer with essentially no rain at all.
Winter rainy season, with storms lasting all day to several days and steady, soaking rain, starts in November usually, sometimes late October. These are storm systems that come down out of the north. That season lasts until March, and sometimes goes into April.
San Diego has an average annual rainfall less than does Tucson, AZ.

(21,646 posts)A few years ago I was a week in LA in Feb . Everyone said expect sone rain but it was hot and sunny instead . I think that was another year you CA folks were starting the year way below average and went later in to a drought . I hope you folks get what you need this year.
We had extreme cold like this in Chicago 2014 but this year we broke some records and + 53 like now predicted for Thursday is something of a normal temp for maybe March here
