This is not funny or a passing "once in a hundred year" event. THIS IS THE NEW NORMAL! Anyone born now will never know what "normal" was. This is the present, not the future any longer. The Moron has stopped research from scientists from being released to the public. Scientists' jobs are gone and there will be no one replacing them. All of their research will remain hidden and no new funding is coming. We are relying on the scientists around the world for their research. This is what the fucking moron is doing to all of us and our children, animals and planet. This is reality under the moron.

I'm glad my house has been standing (on a little peninsula @ confluence of river and creek) for 100+ years, and HOPE it will last as long as my family and I want to be here.

A decision must be made. It's put out the garbage evening. Put it out now, or set the alarm and arise early to put it out. After the truck has come, there will be empty trash cans all over the place. I guess it's good they are now plastic.

First world problem ....

I'll give https://www.windy.com a try, thanks for the suggestion.

If you are in the area at issue I would NOT put them out now, and I would expect not to be able to do so tomorrow for 'usual' pick up. Some other day!

I took my one little trash bag to my drop spot this afternoon, but did not include cans! (Southern MD)

You described your location to me quite a while ago, at least the one between the water. Winds gusting to just over 40 here and from a direction wnw moving to nw in our most sheltered direction. I think I'll get our neighbor (we share a can) to put it out when he goes at 5am and I'll get up early to take it in and to gather up all the neighbors' cans that go flying.

edit...neat site there.

this is not the storm of the century. Around here we do see this sort of thing every so often, although more normally around Fall. (October surprises aren't that surprising any more)

This is a major storm, but not even close to hurricane-worthy. Some flooding, some wind damage.
.
Every time a storm is on the way, local nooz tells us we're all going to die. Stores sell out of milk, water, and batteries and everyone gets a day off. The next day we're back to close to normal. The day after that the stores are restocked.

Maybe they have to play it up to get our attention, maybe they do it for ratings, maybe they do it so we'll feel better when it's not as bad as we were warned... Who knows...

And we had a blizzard with almost foot of snow and winds over 50 a month or so ago. We lived.

Some power will be out, as it always is during a big storm, but outages are usually localized and fixed quickly. Around here, at least.

outages in Maryland.
I am in NJ, not a whisper of wind, and slight rain.
I hope the forecasters are wrong. Outages are a pain in the butt.
I love that site windy.com, but do not understand the arrows.
Are they wind direction? It looks like storm is circular.

not much more than "normal".

And we do need the rain to recharge our aquifer.

9. So far not so bad down in Central Virginia

Dominion Power says about 5% (130k) meters have no power in their entire service area. Looking at their outage map, they are not repairing anything in my area. My take is they are inspecting and planning. They can't work in bucket trucks until the winds die down. When the winds ebb will be a big factor in when they can get restorations going.

So far our peak gust was 39 at the airport. I'm at 400 feet lower elevation than the airport and I'm in a fairly sheltered location in the river bottom. Nearby PWSs show gusts in the mid 20s which matches my estimate.

So far we are lucky. Good luck to those more severely affected. Be careful.

12. Updated Dominion outage numbers 10 a.m.

Mar 2018

8.5 % 1884 incidents affecting more than 222k services. They are working on some in the area. In my surrounding county 29% are out.

I've been up and down the block removing trash cans from the pavement. There is a noticeable wind chill. We have a gust in the mid thirties around hourly at the airport with winds in the mid and upper teens. This is much less than the warning and forecast. Even less where I am five miles south of the airport.

Take care.
