I really send vibes to the devastated countries. They just got a terrible situation that could have happened anywhere in the world.

But two of the things I feared the most as a kid growing up in the 50s and watching TV were quicksand and being swallowed by fissures that opened up during earthquakes.
Not sure I’ve ever heard of a quicksand death, and being in a building is certainly worse during an earthquake than having to avoid falling into a crevasse.

in the middle of a street. I once stayed at a B&B there and one of the guests saw her neighbor lose his life falling into a deep crevass in their street.

An article in the Post compared deaths in Japan and Chile to those in Turkey with similar magnitude earthquakes. The difference is HUGE due to the difference in building codes. Fewer than 500 deaths in urban areas in Chile and Japan.

I’d have thought there would be significant deviations. I read somewhere that the fissure was 180miles (300km) or so from end to end.
