RIP Grandpa

My granddad passed at 4am this morning. He was 89 and just a couple weeks away from his 90th. He served in the Pacific during WW II.

he must have told.

My grandparents all passed away before I was a teen and sadly the last time I saw any of them was when I was 9yrs old. We moved from Scotland to Canada and I never saw them again.
I've always envied those who have had Grandparents.

My heart goes out to you all.

He showed us the Japanese officer's sword and the Japanese rifle he brought home. He talked about had worked as a guard at Sugamo Prison following the war and came face to face with Hideki Tōjō. Grandpa would talk about other stuff, such as having to spend his wedding night in the back seat of a car because it was the only accommodation available after a blizzard struck during their wedding ceremony. Or farming when he was growing up and how he liked it when his dad finally got a tractor.

Grandpa was a tough old bird too, getting up around 4am for chores on the farm every day of the week and working up until about three years ago. Grandpa was not happy when he had to move into assisted living but it did give him a few more years then he would've had otherwise - I think he would have gone sooner if he had tried stayed home.

Grandpa surprised me after that idiot W. started that disaster in Iraq - he was opposed to that war from the get go. I think it was due to his experiences as a younger person and that we weren't in danger from the Iraqis.

and i'm happy you had the opportunity to know him as long as you did. i never got a chance to meet either of my grandfathers--they were both gone before i was born. although i did hear a lot about them and according to what i heard they were pretty great guys.

8. My maternal one died just before my 5th birthday

I don't remember my maternal grandpa that well as a result. I am grateful that I have good memories of my paternal granddad.
