State university students would pay hundreds more under next round of fee increases proposed for 17

PIERRE | Just as South Dakota taxpayers may be asked to pay more to help students pay for college, the students themselves may be asked to shell out more in fees at four of the six state university campuses in the future.

Campus buildings, student services and athletic programs would be the most common beneficiaries if the proposed hikes in general activity fees go into effect as proposed at Black Hills State University, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and Northern State University.

The student fees at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapid City, which now charges the highest per-student fees in the state, would not go up under the proposal.

As the state Board of Regents prepares to ask the Legislature in 2017 for additional tuition assistance for all students, four of the state universities are asking to increase mandatory fees by hundreds of dollars on every student.
