Schumer: Mainstream Republicans Planning Resurgence If Obama Wins

Mainstream Republicans have confided in Sen. Chuck Schumer that they intend to regain control of the GOP from the tea party wing if Mitt Romney loses the election, the New York Democrat told reporters Thursday.

“There has always been a group of Republicans that want to compromise. But they have been outshouted, outflanked by tea party. They’re about equal,” Schumer said. “If we keep the Senate and the president wins, and even better if we take the House, though the mainstream — there are no moderates — the mainstream Republicans are going to be strengthened. They’ve told me that. And the leaders — both [House Speaker John] Boehner and [Senate Minority Leader Mitch] McConnell sort of have a foot in each camp. But they’re pulled and dragged by the tea party. They’re going to be strengthened to come and compromise with us.”

At a press conference with other Senate Democratic leaders, Schumer argued that the ostensible Republican strategy of winning the 2012 elections by thwarting President Obama’s economic initiatives “doesn’t look so hot now” and “is backfiring on them.” He predicted Romney’s “flailing campaign” will help “break the fever” of GOP obstruction.

and teabagger infected Republicans.

That means all 210+ Republicans and the 47 Republicans needs to tender their resignation immediately.

Start over from scratch.

Permanent minority party for the next 1000 years.

The repukes need to purge their party of the extremist Teabag Taliban if they want to remain relevant--and so we can poke fun at them on the basis of their ideas instead of their insanity.

after a full term of obstructionism.. not only embarrassing the president, but betraying the trust of the American people, they need to be kept from power for a generation..

we need to get hit list for 2014 and start working on every Republican senate seat thats up in the next election, soon as the confetti is swept from this years victory floor

If Romney loses, the teabaggers will put the blame on the establishment for running Romney and claim that they could have won had they run a "true" conservative, hence more reason to continue the gridlock. I really don't see how a Romney loss could help the so-called mainstream wing of the GOP.

I believe the Republican base has gone to the right, perhaps not as far right as some Tea Party members, but far enough right to favor the Tea Party over mainstream candidates.

I remember hearing Tea Party candidates defeating mainstream Republican candidates in a number of primaries the last few years. I admit to not having facts or figures on my side and would welcome someone with the facts and figures to either confirm my belief or prove me wrong.

I will agree with those who say the Republican Party, if they lose big, and I mean lose not only the Presidency, but lose a number of Senate and House seats, will go through a period of reflection, or should I be more blunt and say a period of the long knives.

I don't believe we can guess the outcome of an internal Republican fight. We can hope moderate Republicans will prevail, but we should steel ourselves for the possibility they will not.

We must not interfere in their internal affairs. If we say we want the moderates to win, we may be giving the moderates the kiss of death within their party.

I feel the Democratic Party has been pulled to the right, too far to the right for my tastes. I suspect some moderate Republicans might be more comfortable in the current Democratic Party.

I wish we could pull both parties to the left.
