(4,211 posts)Self described democrats constitute only about 30%-36% of the population (depending on your source)... about 14% have stated unequivocally they wont vote for hillary... putting max possible votes for Hillary at about 25% of the population from remaining dems. Hillary has virtually no cross-over appeal, meaning the 43% that make up the GOP would not be voting for her. She would have to win at least 18% of the 32% of independents just to break even with the GOP.
Of course, this is without accounting for the variety of miscellaneous reasons people don't or wont vote, such as lack of enthusiasm, lack of interest in politics, disenfranchisement, etc. Those factors will of course drop those numbers down even more.Bernie has a higher chance of actually getting elected... just on cross-over appeal alone.
In fact, Bernie's cross over appeal is fairly significant:

(10,270 posts)The GOP screws up even a little bit with this one, and they're looking at either an out-and-out revolt in their tent, or a brokered convention.
With Barack and Michelle, Hillary and Bill, Bernie,Biden and Liz Warren ALL out on the campaign trail (likely no matter who our nominee is)?
Jezuz Christ it's CHRISTMAS over here=) !!!!

(95,337 posts)I mean if Biden was on the list I'd might argue but he's not running. And even if Biden ran and somehow managed to lose the primaries I'd be happy to support any of these 3 candidates!

(23,099 posts)Thank you for stating such a great truth in the midst of the primary wars that are going on here. I'll be voting for Bernie in the primary, 100%. However, if he doesn't win the general, I'll vote for whoever has the D behind their name because they won't be nearly as batshit destructively crazy as whoever is running with the R behind their name.

And I am guilty of doing it too. Whoever wins, we will all have to come together in the end. Sometimes I worry that some cuts have gone too deep, but we simply cannot afford not to stand together.

Hillary Wins: us Bernie supporters will have to deal with it, and realize we will have to try and keep fighting basically the same battles we do now under Obama, where we are flanked on both sides: The GOP on one and the DLC on the other. And try and influence whatever incremental advancements we can. But it wouldn't help to continue the attacks. There are many good things about Hillary, and what she has had to endure over the years. We have to coax the best from her.
Bernie Wins: Even more work would be involved. As every corporate news network would be fanning the slightest faux pas, the mildest stumble, while undercutting everything in his plan. They'd be working hand in hand with the GOP. And he wouldn't get much support from the DLC either. It truly would be a peoples revolution and it would take a lot of hands on support.

the DNC who limited debates and scheduled them when they would have the least possible viewers, the country has been prevented from seeing how spectacularly better our candidates are than the Repubs who, with their higher number of debates , all well scheduled, have been seen by millions more viewers.
It's sad and dangerous that the Democratic message and candidates have had more limited exposure.

(3,275 posts)I will support the democratic nominee for president. I favor one of these three candidates but if that person does not get the nomination then I will campaign for the person who does. Any of them would be better then the vile, odious, repugnant group of atrocities that the republicans have inflicted on the country this year.
