Thanks to a heavy barrage of TV advertising, Republican U.S. Senate nominee Tom Smith appears to have gained ground in his still-uphill battle to unseat Democrat Bob Casey Jr.
<snip>
A Muhlenberg College/Allentown Morning Call poll made public Friday showed the effects of Smith's ad blitz.
The relatively small survey of 427 likely voters, with an error margin of plus or minus 5 percentage points, reported Casey with 44 percent support and Smith with 36 percent backing. The remainder of voters - 20 percent - were undecided or didn't like either candidate.

(14,584 posts)I think he sat back too much for sure.
But, outside of losing in a primary to Rendell, he has won by pretty big margins in every state level race. His name is pretty solid.
I am starting to see his ads now.

(9,279 posts)But Casey's not an idiot about it.
Casey's popular, he seems safe but nothing should be taken for granted here.

(24,776 posts)Casey won't stand for that cruel, immoral, diabolical rAyn budget which takes the food out of the mouths of babies to feed the greed of billionaires.
typical ham handed republican twit reply to a question.
But, not a direct statement, and as noted, Casey as a catholic is not pro-choice.
I don't think he needs or wants this to get messy.
He has a good name and the Rs had a hard time getting any viable candidate to run against him, and smith is seen as the clear underdog.
No reason to lower Casey's standing or prop Smith up by getting into muddy waters.
Casey needs to get his positive ads up and run basic comparison ads, and he should win fairly comfortably.

(34,857 posts)That seems to be the case here. Just pre-election 'tightening' that won't amount to much. The fact Smith is making gains and still trails by 8 points says it all.
