Is the John Lewis controversy based on a misunderstanding?

Bernie Sanders was the president of the University of Chicago chapter of the Congress on Racial Equality. He coordinated with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, but didn't belong to the latter.

John Lewis was "chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for three years, from 1963 to 1966."

Maybe John Lewis thinks Sanders claimed to belong to SNCC, and feels that he would have met Sanders in that case. But Sanders was in CORE.

I don't have it but it will be posted somewhere. The tone of it sounds to me like Lewis is questioning the truth of Sanders' claims of civil rights activism.

...about how badly Bernie supporters were attacking Rep Lewis on social media, but unable to cite any verifiable examples.

This was an orchestrated smear job, and Rrp Lewis played his role to a T. Fortunately we have seen these RW swiftboating smears before, and can call them out.
This will be only a footnote in Rep John Lewis's legacy, albeit a rather slimey one.

I'm pretty sure Bernie can prove his claims. And if it comes to that and he does then that is major embarrassment to such an impeccable civil rights icon.

Then about a year ago Bernie mentioned he was with the Congress of Racial Equality, and one time more recently. He was correcting someone the first time, but said it on his own the second time.

It's easy to see why the two groups could be confused, and SNCC is cited more since it was better known, to some at least.
Like saying a person worked for Staples instead of Office Depot for lack of a better example.

But it looks like this might be another tempest in a teapot effort, like the student photo of Bernie standing with a seated group in a college room in Chicago that people claimed was actually Bruce ___?

if he says, I didn't intend to suggest Bernie is lying about his activism, I was specifically talking about his involvement with my organization, then it could be seen that way. Otherwise it looks a lot like a smear job, which is not unheard of in politics.
