It has to be said. The phrase "under the bus" has "jumped the shark".

It is now being used with such reckless abandon and with such lack of meaning that it has come to mean nothing.

In fact, it is starting to sound really old too.

"Under the bus", as it is currently being used, is anemic and played out, and about as timely as "Macarena"

It's wordier than under the bus, true, but I agree with your post: honesty is the best policy.
