Human Rights Watch released a report Sunday providing new indications that Saudi Arabia has fired American-made cluster munitions, banned by international treaty, in civilian areas of Yemen, and said their use may also violate United States law.

If confirmed, the report could put new pressure on the United States over support for its ally Saudi Arabia in the Yemen conflict. The Americans have sold arms and furnished training and expertise to a Saudi-led coalition that has faced widespread criticism for what rights groups call an indiscriminate bombing campaign against Yemens Houthi rebels in nearly a year of fighting.....

Textron bribed Saddam Husseins regime, and manufactures cluster bombs
Providence, RI: Various elected officials and anti-war activists are calling on Hillary Clinton to return campaign contributions from Textron, Inc. Textron is a Rhode Island-headquartered Fortune 500 conglomerate, from whose PAC Clinton took money in 2005 and 2006. Textron bribed the Hussein government during the lead-up to the Iraq war, and is a major manufacturer of cluster bombs, which yield high rates of civilian casualties.

(3,964 posts)Why do you think the U.S. still hasn't signed the landmine treaty? If every country agrees to stop the usage f cluster bombs then the U.S. should sign on. Until then, let's not hamstring ourselves.
This is one of the arguments I have heard. It doesn't mean I personally believe them.

(80,708 posts)We have an arsenal of thermonuclear hydrogen bombs deliverable by a three-pronged deterrence apparatus comprised of strategic bombers, intercontinental ballistic missiles, and ballistic missile submarines.
Fuck me if we're gonna really be "hamstrung" by not using land mines anymore.
ProudToBeLiberal
(3,964 posts)This is the prime reason why we aren't signing onto the landmine treaty.

(80,708 posts)is the DMZ not already full of land mines?
Anyway, it appears that the US signing on the the treaty with a condition as an exception for Korea is a possibility, as that is already de facto US policy.
But that thread was about cluster munitons, not land mines, anyway. And Hillary's 2006 vote, which came in a long line of particularly bad Senate activity, starting with the IWR vote, continuing through "marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman", sponsoring flag burning legislation in blatant conflict with the 1st Amendment, and "seeking middle ground on abortion".
Not surprising, to me at least, that in this spasm of establishing her defense hawk/"family values" bona fides, she also voted against banning cluster bombs.
