So far.....not so well, eh?
A primary challenge only would have weakened Obama in the 2012 general election and it would have accomplished nothing, but help the GOP. The people sitting in that church know it.
It was a stupid fucking idea and now it's coming back to bite him.

I'm sure blacks in South Carolina will flock to Bernie in droves.

I can see why the left would consider mounting a primary challenge in 2012. Some of us think the principles are more important than party.

Of course Bill Clinton made this statement and he also said "a few years ago he would have (referring to Obama) been carrying our luggage"
By the way When is Hillary going to release her speech transcripts?
When they are released are you going to say some reporter made all that stuff up
But you say Bernie Sanders is not running against Bill Clinton Correect he is not.But when Bill Clinton goes out on the stump and lies about Bernie Sanders or any of his goals or issues then Bill Clinton is fair game and there is a lot to talk about with Bill.
Did you know that Bill got so negative against Barrack Obama in 2008 the campaign staff harnessed him and kept him back stage? But couldn't keep him there...because well thats Bill

(517 posts)Bernie Sanders was arrested in 1963 for protesring segregation and worked tirelessly for equality. During that same time, Hillary Clinton was working on the Goldwater campaign FOR segregation as a registered Republican but people act as if he has no credentials?? (517 posts)I dont understand why listing what I do know and asking for more real and true info is upsetting to you. I am leaning Bernie but not totally convinced Hillary wont be who I vote for. Im sorry if this is not the place to go for info on the candidates as I am researching but by all means, belittle my questions. Do you feel better about yourself now?
Nonhlanhla
(2,074 posts)that if it's just info you want, that you don't start by repeating the same attack about how Hillary "worked for Goldwater." We all know that. She was 17 years old, for goodness' sake. By the time she was 21, the age of full adulthood, she was a Democrat.
From Wikipedia:
In 1965, Rodham enrolled at Wellesley College, where she majored in political science. During her freshman year, she served as president of the Wellesley Young Republicans;with this Rockefeller Republican-oriented group, she supported the elections of Mayor John Lindsay and of Senator Edward Brooke. She later stepped down from this position, as her views changed regarding the American Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. In a letter to her youth minister at this time, she described herself as "a mind conservative and a heart liberal". In contrast to the 1960s current that advocated radical actions against the political system, she sought to work for change within it.
In her junior year, Rodham became a supporter of the antiwar presidential nomination campaign of Democrat Eugene McCarthy. In early 1968, she was elected president of the Wellesley College Government Association and served through early 1969. Following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Rodham organized a two-day student strike and worked with Wellesley's black students to recruit more black students and faculty. In her student government role, she played a role in keeping Wellesley from being embroiled in the student disruptions common to other colleges. A number of her fellow students thought she might some day become the first female President of the United States.
lmbradford
(517 posts)I dont know why that was so hard.

(8,017 posts)because Bernie supporters keep baiting Hillary supporters to "just tell us what she did." Then, when we spend the time to list the things she's done, they say it's not enough. That's why. There is much more to tell, but you can look it up just like we did. She has worked to help poor, minority and disadvantaged people all her life... but hey, she was a Goldwater girl when she was 17.

I didn't see anything in the OP article about Bill, but you are correct that Bill doesn't equal Hillary. (145,839 posts)There are good reasons why the demographics are not working for Sanders and why many voters including some African American voters are not supporting Sanders. Demographics are important in that this explains one of the big divides between Sanders supporters and Clinton supporters. There is a vast difference in how Sanders supporters and Sanders view President Obama and how other Democrats view President Obama. I admit that I am impressed with the amount accomplished by President Obama in face of the stiff GOP opposition to every one of his proposals and I personally believe that President Obama has been a great President. It seems that this view colors who I am supporting in the primary http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/clinton-sanders-obama_us_56aa378de4b05e4e3703753a?utm_hp_ref=politics
On one side of this divide are activists and intellectuals who are ambivalent, disappointed or flat-out frustrated with what Obama has gotten done. They acknowledge what they consider modest achievements -- like helping some of the uninsured and preventing the Great Recession from becoming another Great Depression. But they are convinced that the president could have accomplished much more if only hed fought harder for his agenda and been less quick to compromise.
They dwell on the opportunities missed, like the lack of a public option in health care reform or the failure to break up the big banks. They want those things now -- and more. In Sanders, they are hearing a candidate who thinks the same way.
On the other side are partisans and thinkers who consider Obama's achievements substantial, even historic. They acknowledge that his victories were partial and his legislation flawed. This group recognizes that there are still millions of people struggling to find good jobs or pay their medical bills, and that the planet is still on a path to catastrophically high temperatures. But they see in the last seven years major advances in the liberal crusade to bolster economic security for the poor and middle class. They think the progress on climate change is real, and likely to beget more in the future.
It seems that many of the Sanders supporters hold a different view of President Obama which is also a leading reason why Sanders is not exciting African American voters. Again, it may be difficult for Sanders to appeal to African American voters when one of the premises of his campaign is that Sanders does not think that President Obama is a progressive or a good POTUS.
Again, I am not ashamed to admit that I like President Obama and think that he has accomplished a great deal which is why I do not mind Hillary Clinton promising to continue President Obama's legacy. There are valid reasons why many non-African American democrats (myself included) and many African American Democratic voters are not supporting Sanders.
I understand why Sanders supporters dislike talking about demographics but the fact remain that Sanders supporters tend to not like President Obama and that dislike affects the amount of support that Sanders is getting from certain demographic groups.
I think he is a good President and I have heard Sanders say so also. He disagreed with him on a couple of issues as do I. I think Sanders wanted Obama to fight harder, especially for single payer and drug negotiation and felt that Obama won on the yes we can campaign and then let most of it go. Is that unfair in your assessment? I think both of these men are fighting a losing battle unless we can get the money out of politics and I believe only Sanders can do that at this point. Clinton is too tainted by the money. If she didnt have the big money taint, Id vote for her but I was wondering what was keeping African Americans back from Sanders. Thanks for being so candid and speaking with me.
Gothmog
(145,839 posts)I dislike Citizens United for a host of reasons and I strongly believe that the only way to get rid of Citizens United is to elect a Democrat in 2016 which is why I am supporting the most electable Democratic candidate. President Obama was against Citizens United but had to use a super pac in 2012 to keep the contest close. Hillary Clinton is against Citizens United and has committed to only appoint SCOTUS justices who will vote to overturn this decision https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-politics/wp/2015/05/14/hillary-clintons-litmus-test-for-supreme-court-nominees-a-pledge-to-overturn-citizens-united/
Clinton's emphatic opposition to the ruling, which allowed corporations and unions to spend unlimited sums on independent political activity, garnered the strongest applause of the afternoon from the more than 200 party financiers gathered in Brooklyn for a closed-door briefing from the Democratic candidate and her senior aides, according to some of those present.
"She got major applause when she said would not name anybody to the Supreme Court unless she has assurances that they would overturn" the decision, said one attendee, who, like others, requested anonymity to describe the private session.
If the make-up of the court does not change by 2017, four of the justices will be 78 years of age or older by the time the next president is inaugurated.
This is the only practical way to undo the damage done by Citizen United in that it will be impossible to get a constitutional amendment through congress and the states to undo this decision. That means that if you want to get rid of Citizens United, then one must support a candidate who can win in 2016 and support the most viable general election candidate. I simply do not believe that Sanders is electable and I strongly believe that the best way to overturn Citizens United is to elect Hillary Clinton

(17,651 posts)Right now he sees Sanders and Clinton as possessing a similar record on African-American issues.
"In my limited view of things, I've assessed that they're pretty much on the same wavelength with it. I think the two of them are saying what needs to be said -- of course that's politics -- but based on their record, I think the two of them have shown some substantial evidence that they are interested and they are concerned with racial equality," he said.
Jackson added that he thought most of the people in the room knew who Sanders was, though he conceded that Clinton "would be the more popular face, the more familiar name" if she were to walk in.

But the question remains, who would you trust to make the lives of all people better? Can't make a decision if you don't have all the information.

(10,493 posts)Candidates too often stay in safe zones. Holding only rallies or small gatherings with invited guests or crowds of people eager to come hear them. Or going in to very public places, where they can move in/out quickly - grabbing a photo op at a deli counter, etc. He faced a tough crowd with little sign of support, but he still reached out and shared what he hoped for a future should he become president. And I'm proud of him for that. Some wouldn't try.

(11,243 posts)Candidates go where the voters are. Fish frys, state fairs, church gatherings..... Particularly if you are a white candidate looking for support in the black community.
He is not a child. He wants to be president. If he is not comfortable in a SC church, probably does not bode well, big picture.

Their needs, wants, and expectations may be different from what he thinks they are. Sanders needs more interpersonal skills. He needs to give credit where credit is due.

(51 posts)I watched the speech and from what I can tell, the people were dipping their food while he was talking? It was held in a dining room and there was a buffett! The people who were getting their food couldn't applaud, but they were listening and the others applauded and responded to Bernie's speech. At the end there was quite a bit of applause! Just the media trying to spin their lies and insinuations!

Lemon and a dry E capsule as preservative, as I am *not* doing this every day.

(135,425 posts)He made remarks at a microphone next to a buffet table offering chicken, collard greens and dinner rolls. The line at the table kept moving as Mr. Sanders and Benjamin T. Jealous, a former N.A.A.C.P. president, spoke. The Brookland Baptist congregation proved to be a tough crowd.
We have in America today a broken criminal justice system, Mr. Sanders said, pausing briefly after this line from his stump speech, which is usually met with applause. Here it garnered very little.
His visit underscored Mr. Sanderss difficulty in strengthening his support among black voters in South Carolina, who make up more than half of registered Democrats heading into the state primary this Saturday. While some applauded politely as he offered now-familiar lines about racial discrimination, the loudest claps came when he talked about President Obama....

The NY Times is a bunch of establishment Hillashills. So some people at one church, according to their "objective" reporter, were more interested in eating their food than they were in clapping or cheering loudly for Sanders and Jealous? And that is their idea of "news" that is fit to print?

(57,936 posts)No Democrat is going to win in South Carolina. Not going to happen.
The state is irrelevant to the Democratic primary.
South Carolina has 9 electoral votes. (California, my state, has 55.)
Last time it voted for a Democrat for president was 1976, Jimmy Carter.
No way South Carolina is going to vote for either Hillary or Bernie this year.
So the reception in that church is basically irrelevant.
Bernie is doing them a favor going to their church. But the fact is that South Carolina and South Carolinians are a lost cause when it comes to Democrats in presidential races.

Ben Jealous.. not the reaction he was hoping, eh?
WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. The problem began as soon as Bernie Sanders walked into the dining room of the revered, and predominantly black, Brookland Baptist Church. Instead of flocking to him, as people do at his large college rallies, many of churchs 780 members looked up for a moment, then quietly went back to eating their Sunday feast unmoved as Mr. Sanders, the Democratic senator from Vermont, tried to work the room.
And, it didn't end any better.. snippets..
Ms. Brooker, who later said she was undecided and had once considered voting for Senator Marco Rubio, a Florida Republican, was again the loudest voice. Amen, she said.
Yes, fired up, a few more in the crowd offered, but most continued to eat silently.
