Security Logs of Hillary Clinton’s Email Server Are Said to Show No Evidence of Hacking

WASHINGTON — A former aide to Hillary Clinton has turned over to the F.B.I.computer security logs from Mrs. Clinton’s private server, records that showed no evidence of foreign hacking, according to people close to a federal investigation into Mrs. Clinton’s emails.

The security logs bolster Mrs. Clinton’s assertion that her use of a personal email account to conduct State Department business while she was the secretary of state did not put American secrets into the hands of hackers or foreign governments. The former aide, Bryan Pagliano, began cooperating with federal agents last fall, according to interviews with a federal law enforcement official and others close to the case. Mr. Pagliano described how he set up the server in Mrs. Clinton’s home in Chappaqua, N.Y., and according to two of the people, he provided agents the security logs. The law enforcement official described the interview as routine. Most of those close to the case spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the continuing investigation.

Mrs. Clinton’s work-related emails as secretary of state, which have been made public as part of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit, show that she received spam emails intended to try to lure her into clicking a malicious link. Those emails, known as “spear phishing” attempts, weretraced to Russia, but it was not clear from the emails alone whether anyone clicked on those links or whether the security was compromised.

Mr. Pagliano told the agents that nothing in his security logs suggested that any intrusion occurred. Security logs keep track of, among other things, who accessed the network and when. They are not definitive, and forensic experts can sometimes spot sophisticated hacking that is not apparent in the logs, but computer security experts view logs as key documents when detecting hackers.

Meanwhile, actual State Dept servers get hacked routinely.

1. That's it - case closed.

So, what's next on the list?

4. You really should have read the article.

The question of whether Mrs. Clinton’s server was hacked is separate from whether a crime occurred.

3. That's a completely idiotic statement by those sources.

a "good" hack by someone would, by definition, not leave traces...

and what about domestic hacks? would it not have been more definitive to say that there was "no trace of hacks to the email server" and leave the "foreign" qualifier out?

And this isn't the the issue anyway... the issue is that this server, not in the control of government IT security procedures, was used by the SOS for sensitive email. While this might not have been illegal and maybe wasn't compromised... it did show a lack of judgment on the part of the SOS and her staff.

15. Huh?

I ran Security for a major US Government installation for part of my career. I was a "hacker" before the term had even been invented. My remarks are not "hoping for an FBI indictment", I could really care less.

BTW, when I worked for the US government for over 10 years, I ALWAYS used my government email for ONLY government business and had my own email that I used for ONLY my personal items. Two phones, two laptops, etc. It's a policy I've continued in the private sector. Pain in the ass... sure... but I will not be accused, ever, of leaking company secrets by using a non company issued laptop or phone to access company emails or information.

If someone steals sensitive information from me, it will NOT be my fault.

I would only hope that all government officials would have followed that policy... including SOS Clinton.

18. She has said, ad infinitum and ad nauseam, it was a mistake.

I don't see where laws were broke as the relevant laws require intent or gross negligence which is of a much higher order than simple negligence.

9. bunker

I don't think we've witnessed this much speculation since that expressed by the Germans toward the end of WWII. Things must be getting rough in the Bernie Bunker.

16. Is is beyond sad that some Democrats want to see a fellow Democrat "Fitzmased".

I was castigated in a thread implicitly directed at me for calling certain people "foes". Well, I have no regrets regarding my characterization , none at all...

They sure as Hell aren't my allies.

6. emerge logrotate

How long do the logs stay around before being deleted? Regardless, putting sensitive information on an outside server is stupid. It's also illegal. It would be hard to refute an argument that Hillary didn't care about national security by doing this.

13. This is much needed news for Clinton but there's a few thing's to note

"Mr. Pagliano told the agents that nothing in his security logs suggested that any intrusion occurred. Security logs keep track of, among other things, who accessed the network and when. They are not definitive, and forensic experts can sometimes spot sophisticated hacking that is not apparent in the logs, but computer security experts view logs as key documents when detecting hackers."

As this points out, logs aren't definitive and this article isn't coming from the FBI. Brian is also suspected of deleting his own post pst file from the time he worked with Clinton at the St Dept. They can find his emails from after she left tho. It's highly speculated that this is the reason he pled the 5th along with the fact that he was working off the books on Clinton’s server. Which was a violation of his contract.

There's also the fact that there is more than one server in the custody of the FBI.
