Because it looks like Cruz may do well tonight

(8,812 posts)... I always assumed he was ineligible to run for President, even though his parents were both American citizens.
I can understand why McCain would be eligible (he was born in Panama but on a U.S. Naval Air Station), but not Cruz.

(90,667 posts)I grew up thinking that since children of American expats are Americans themselves, this part of the eligibility argument is a non- issue, especially for the children of US military personnel. I always thought "natural born" meant "from birth" and not necessarily "on US soil."
It came up with Goldwater, because Arizona was a Territory when he was born, but it was soon dismissed on the public stage. It came up again with McCain, but was dismissed in the public sphere because wherever a US embassy or military base is, there is US soil. The only instance where this issue was ever pursued in courts, that I know of, was over Obama -- but the birther premise was so patently, absurdly, and provably false that it could make no headway in legal courts, only in that of Wingnut public opinion.
So here we have Cruz, born of an American mother in a foreign country. I really would think that would be another non-issue-- except for Trump and the fact that Cruz is a horrible human being. So I say, Go to it!
