It is in "disarray" because many Americans want it to be a left-wing party, and the donor class vigorously disagrees.

To answer your question, my best guess would be 1968.

And if the Party actually cared then they would be supporting the correct candidate to fight Trump not Republican-lite Clinton.

though I understand your post... but part of the problem is exactly a lack of any organized opposition starting with the turner raids.

Follow me, we have a center left candidate (Sanders) running, against everybody, a center right politician (clinton) and a far right right enabled by all.
