Dan Savage: Clinton crediting Nancy Reagan for helping AIDS victims is a ‘f*cking lie’

"Columnist and LGBT activist Dan Savage ripped Hillary Clinton on Friday for saying that former First Lady Nancy Reagan helped start “a national conversation” about the HIV virus.

“This is a f*cking lie,” Savage wrote in The Stranger. “You could only say the Reagans started “a national conversation” about AIDS if terrified, desperate, and dying people screaming “WHY AREN’T YOU SAYING OR DOING ANYTHING ABOUT AIDS!” at the Reagans counts. It does not.”"

This gaffe might turn out to be huge!
I personally think that Hillary was just trying to say nice things before her funeral. Also to pander for crossover votes.

The gays died, the conservatives thought it was great that God was punishing them for their sins, and the majority of Americans only worried that they might catch it from a toilet seat. I am glad she had the decency to apologize but would she have done so without the outrage generated by her lie? I think not.

But you know what? Up to that point I was looking at the society pictures of "the club you aren't in" and suppressing my gag reflex. Maybe Nancy did do that quietly, and only the 1% knows, and Hill forgot her audience wasn't just the 1%.

candidate that stood for LGBT rights all along?

Senator Sanders has been a longtime supporter of LGBT rights. In 1983, during his first term as Mayor of Burlington, Sen. Sanders supported the city’s first ever Pride Parade. He later signed a city ordinance banning housing discrimination.

When he served in the House of Representatives, then-Congressman Sanders voted against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 1993 and the so-called “Defense of Marriage Act” in 1996. Sen. Sanders hailed the landmark Supreme Court decisions in 2013 and 2015 which struck down DOMA and recognized same-sex marriage is a right in all 50 states, calling the decisions a “victory for same-sex couples across our country as well as all those seeking to live in a nation where every citizen is afforded equal rights.”

I'm old enough that I had some vague awareness of what was going on at the time, but not old enough for it to seem really real to me until, years later, I moved to San Francisco and became friends with people who had Been There--who had buried literally all of their friends, and still felt the survivor's guilt 25 years later. I don't have words to describe the effect that had on me; but I can say that your message needs to be repeated again and again, because even among those who agree with you politically, most cannot truly fathom the magnitude of the horror of those days. And this would be true even if we didn't have Hillary and her ilk papering over their past sins. (And to be clear, I'm not pretending I "get" it in the same way you do--I was just fortunate enough to gain some second-hand insights from personal friends. I know damn well that's not the same thing.)

So thanks again. I love seeing you put Camp Weathervane in its place for sure, but you're doing something far more important here. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
