2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumClinton’s dismal approval ratings prompt Dem fears
***
The historic comparisons are stark. At this point in the 2008 presidential cycle, then-Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) was seen favorably by 62 percent of voters and unfavorably by just 33 percent. Even in February 2012, the closest comparable point in his re-election campaign, he had a net positive favorability rating in the Gallup poll of 2 percentage points, compared to Clintons current net rating of minus 11.
The story goes on to note that the only saving grace for Clinton is that the Republicans chose this year to have a meltdown and it looks like they'll nominate either Cruz or Trump, two truly awful candidates. Hills would have lost to a Republican who was more palatable to the general population.

I love Berry White, and have posted my share of snarky images.
But that alone aint going to win over independents and disaffected Democrats.

The last paragraph says it all - the right has a HORRIBLE field this time around, at least until their convention.

(53,032 posts)Carville called this right. The GOP has spent close to a billion dollars trashing Hillary since the 1990s when she tried to implement universal healthcare. "Progressives" have repeated those same claims verbatim. Yet despite huge amounts of resources devoted to attacking Clinton, despite Karl Rove's huge financial investment through CrossRoads GPS in trying to make Bernie the nominee, he still trails by 2.4 million votes. So you can celebrate Clinton's unfavorability ratings all you want. The fact is voters--Democrats--still prefer her to Bernie. Even though Bernie himself has vastly outspent Clinton in this campaign, he still can't win a majority of the votes, so now he's leaving the country right before a primary that he MUST win to have a shot at the nomination. But he won't win, and he knows it, so off to Rome he goes, and his campaign plots to seize the nomination against the electoral will of the people. Of course it won't happen. She'll have the required delegates before the convention, but the campaign wants the tap to keep flowing, and so it does.
There are going to be some fascinating books about the workings of that campaign when it's over.

(384 posts)I spent most of the middle part of the 80's working with ACORN and C/LEC to get healthcare on the Dem agenda. Nobody from that time period thought Hillary was an ally. She took a groundswell of support for a popular idea and destroyed it behind closed doors with a bunch of industry lawyers. Her negligence took healthcare off the agenda for 20 years and cost millions of lives. The right wing didnt "spend" a penny bashing her. They reaped Billions.

(166 posts)There are ethereal rumors that a brokered republican convention could lead to them putting up Paul Ryan as their nominee. And with the burning hate that the right has for Secretary Clinton they won't have a problem coming out in droves to vote for Ryan.

(14,255 posts)pasty white guy, they will beat Hillary. I has always looked to me like most GOP voters do not actually care about issues past guns, Murrica!, and fucking over poor people, even if that includes themselves. And they most decidedly do not like Hillary.

I know, I know, people here do not pay attention to this shit... but it is my job.
Go watch some of the photos I posted from the Cruz rally in San Diego... It is not even the mix we had oh four years ago at the Ron Paul rally. And this is not something that people here are paying any attention to.

(14,459 posts)We laugh at the clown car now, but they are working hard to crash Trump right now and have to be thinking of a more solid candidate for convention. If so, things could get very ugly for Team Hill- the best they can say right now is that the bar is low enough for their candidate to trip over.

(2,493 posts)That Cruz will be the nominee because Trump isn't going to get enough votes to win outright and will lose at a contested election. While that might tear the Republican party apart, I shudder to think that we'll end up with Cruz as president because Hillary's numbers are so bad. Not only will the dislike for Hillary drive down Dem turnout, a lot of independents might end up going for Cruz that wouldn't have gone for Trump.

(14,459 posts)And I hope for all of our sakes that the party splits...but the Repubs could pull a nasty rabbit out of their hats if they get their act together. If our party goes to convention as well, it's likely(definite?) our party splits.
Interesting times.

(8,774 posts)to find and endorse a candidate with a strong majority of respect - net favorability rating - within our own party.
For me, the negative view of Hillary Clinton came post-2001.
Hillary Clinton will maintain the status quo and be less transformative and less effective by far than POTUS Obama.
There will be a sizable group within the Democratic Party looking forward to a primary challenge in 2020 in the probable case Hillary Clinton becomes POTUS.
The Democratic Party may lose the 2016 POTUS election with Hillary Clinton despite the GOP only presenting nightmares.
The Democratic leadership failed because they have not identified and supported a POTUS candidate that is respected and favored by a clear majority of the Party.
