Related: About this forumBREAKING: The Pope DEFINITELY won't be meeting with Sanders...
I'm told the conference was just given a message from the Pope, confirming apologetically that he would not be able to attend today.
This apologetic message from the Pope, saying he couldn't make the conference, was a hand-written note shown to the attendees

(856 posts)Sad that Hillary supporters do not see the integrity, character of Bernie. Pope Francis, millions of others have responded to his message to those who have no voice. Pope Francis statement greeting Senator Sanders: " I see in Senator Bernard Sanders a man of great integrity and moral conviction, who understands these principles and genuinely wants what's best for all people".

(9,967 posts)The post I replied to had the " I see in Senator Bernard Sanders a man of great integrity and moral conviction, who understands these principles and genuinely wants what's best for all people" quote. This was from a made up endorsement on a fake site. The Pope has never said those words.
The handwritten note wasn't even addressed to Sanders. And it was a note just saying he would not attend the event. Sanders is never mentioned on the note

(9,967 posts)this supposed quote from Pope Francis " I see in Senator Bernard Sanders a man of great integrity and moral conviction, who understands these principles and genuinely wants what's best for all people".
This was part of the made-up endorsement from the Pope. The reason you can't find anything on it is because this was a lie, made up by the fake site. Pope Francis has never made such statement.

(8,175 posts)I misread your post. I too have asked for proof of the personal welcome Bernie supposedly got from the Pope, in a note, but no evidence yet. That doesn't mean it didn't happen, but until I see proof, I'm not buying it. There have been a few people here who are just not willing to seek the truth, and need something to happen too badlly.

This type of staged and corralled "bumped-into-the-Pontiff" while he was on the way out the door, is HARDLY the same as the formal sit-down "meeting-with-the-pope" that Bernie originally wanted everyone to believe.
But still, I'm sure it was a very thrilling moment for Bernie.

It is an honor just to be invited to the Vatican and bring Bernie's & the Pope's message to the People of the World.
Can't you just accept that and not try and find something negative in everything Bernie? I kind of feel sorry for you that you can't be proud of a fellow countryman that was provided such an honor to speak at this conference.

(1,446 posts)Lots of people met the pope recently in the U.S. It's not all that novel. I guess if Sanders has an epiphany and becomes religious, that would be a plus for his campaign, but otherwise I don't see it changing any minds.

(8,833 posts)when the Hillary Clinton campaign deliberately made Sanders visit to the Vatican a national embarrassment.
The Pope could not meet with Sanders regardless of intent or own druthers because the Clinton campaign deliberately set out to make the event "manipulative and dishonest".
The Vatican just about had to distance itself over what could have been a low key but positive event.
The Clinton campaign nipped most positive in the bud.
Hope you are proud.
Recall Hillary Clinton versus POTUS Obama in 2008; Clinton may well have lost that nomination by the ugly negative campaigning that the Clinton campaign initiated and expanded. I have been surprised how many at DU forgot 2008.
Hillary Clinton set the negative tone. Hillary Clinton hired David Brock. Hillary Clinton lies, deflects, and preserves the privilege of wealth and power.
Hope you are proud in your gloat.

Bernie Sanders meets privately with Pope Francis
ROME U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders met privately with Pope Francis during his overnight trip here, his spokesman said.
The brief meeting took place at the papal residence early Saturday, according Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs.
"They discussed the issues that the senator raised, that the pope has raised so often, at the conference yesterday," Briggs said, adding that there was no discussion of U.S. politics or Sanders's candidacy.
"He said that there was radiance in his presence and that he was very honored and humbled to have the opportunity to meet with the pontiff."
Sanders does not consider the meeting in any way an endorsement of his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, Briggs said.
Under Vatican rules there were no photographs of the meeting because it took place at the papal residence, Briggs said.
A source inside the Vatican, speaking on condition of anonymity, also confirmed the meeting.
"It was a private meeting and was not supposed to become public," the source said. "It had been planned for, and it happened."
And the Pontifical Academy of Sciences confirmed the meeting via Twitter.

(34,845 posts)He said he wouldn't be there because of his London trip. It was a fair conclusion to make that Sanders wouldn't be able to meet with him. Obviously the facts changed but why blame anyone for going with what was known at the time?

(7,231 posts)The envy and jealousy over Sanders' connection with a major religious person are just to obvious to pretend this article is about 'taking the pope at his word'. The OP, like many by the same author, is intended to bash Sanders.
randome
(34,845 posts)Well, and a premature and overblown subject line. I agree it's ridiculous to stake out a claim one way or the other on whether Sanders would meet with the Pope but this specific OP doesn't meet my definition of 'bashing'. Poster was correct that the Pope said he would be unable to attend and that's all the OP says.
Just trying to interject a little calm into this nonsense. Too many on both sides are going overboard with this and other topics related to the Primary.

The Pope met privately with several of the conference attendees, but did not attend or plan to attend the conference.
The meeting with Bernie and the Pope was arranged in advance and was not at the conference.
You called Bernie a liar because you were ignorant of these things.
You mocked and belittled Bernie and his supporters on this board for believing him when he said he was going to meet with the Pope.
He met with the Pope.
You owe everyone you misled and bullied an apology.
