2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo did the Pope write a letter directly to Bernie or did he write a letter to the conference?
There seems to be some confusion surrounding this.
Can anyone provide more insight into this?
Thank you in advance.

(30,481 posts)But I'm not sure why a note from a sexist bigot would be a big deal in the first place. Yes, I got a post hidden for calling the Pope what he is; a sexist bigot.

(135,425 posts)It is customary for the Pontiff (whoever he is) to come by these events at the ten Pontifical Academies (JP and Benedict were especially fond of stopping by and even addressing the conferences of the Academy of LIFE) and pose for a picture with the group after the conference, maybe say a quick hello. No in-depth stuff, just grip/grin. This isn't unusual, he does it all the time, even though he doesn't normally attend the conferences or horn in on the discussions--the idea of these autonomous academies are that they formulate independent thinking, and they present that thinking to the Pontiff so that he can get a sense of what OTHERS are saying about this issue or that.
He sent the note to say he wasn't going to stop by, as he normally does -- that he had an early flight to Lesbos.

(23,272 posts)ROME U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders says he met privately with Pope Francis during his overnight trip here, his spokesman said.
The meeting took place at the papal residence early Saturday, according Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs.
A Vatican source said the meeting was not a chance encounter and had been planned.
The Sanders campaign had been vague about the senator's itinerary here following his address Friday to a Vatican conference. Francis left Rome later Saturday for Greece, where he is visiting migrants stuck on the island of Lesbos. The reticence about a Sanders meeting may be an attempt to avoid the perception that Francis is endorsing Sanders or otherwise involving himself in American politics.
Sanders was invited to address a Vatican seminar on income inequality and economic justice, and took an unusual break from the Democratic primary campaign trail to attend. He had said in a Washington Post interview last week that he admired Francis and hoped to meet him, but that nothing was set.
Sanders quotes Francis frequently in his address to the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, and told reporters afterward that the pope has had enormous influence in airing issues of wealth disparity and climate change.

I'm an unreconstructed insider-opponent of dogmatic RC values, and wow have I ever seen it from the inside.
I think Sanders does the right thing by avoiding confrontation on the particulars of the sex/sin issues, even while totally opposing every conservative/fundamentalist ruling that would discriminate and punish people for being who they are. And oh, does the RC church and the world have enough of that kind of crap! It's not just the RC church, but nevertheless the RC church is huge in number. It is one vestige of the Holy Roman Empire that lives on today.

(50,303 posts)They don't consult me on a daily basis about what they're doing. I'm just guessing, but I imagine there is no one on this site who chats with them daily and has an opportunity to ask the question you're posing. I have a question for you though. Don't you realize this particular "slur du jour" is spent? Time to move on to another faux scandal.
