February 12, 2008
During a recent 60 Minutes interview, Senator Hillary Clinton unveiled a surprising weapon in her fight to become the Democratic presidential nominee: hot peppers.
I eat a lot of hot peppers, she told CBS News anchor Katie Couric, who had asked her how she maintains her stamina on the campaign trail. I for some reason started doing that in 1992, and I swear by it. I think it keeps my metabolism revved up and keeps me healthy.
Nutritionists say Mrs. Clinton may be on to something. Although the scientific study of hot peppers is limited, there are some suggestions that capsaicin, the active ingredient in peppers, has numerous health benefits.
For starters, peppers contain several important nutrients, including beta-carotene, lutein, zeaxanthin and vitamin C, said Jonny Bowden, a board-certified nutritionist and author of The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth. In fact, peppers contain about twice the amount of vitamin C found in citrus fruits, which may help explain why they have emerged as a popular home remedy for fighting colds
Much of the research on capsaicin involves pain relief, and capsaicin is a common ingredient in over-the-counter pain creams. The analgesic effect of the capsaicin found in peppers may help explain why Mrs. Clinton believes it makes her feel better.
People on those kinds of schedules, they are wearing their body down and not sleeping much, Dr. Bowden said. Possibly it could be like taking a couple of aspirins.
Hot peppers also may slightly boost the metabolism, which could give Mrs. Clinton a sense of having more stamina and energy. If you ate a big hot pepper, it would be hard to go right to sleep, Dr. Bowden said.

Clinton eats hot peppers like potato chips and had a collection of 100 hot sauces in the WH http://www.bigstory.ap.org/article/a4438f34e95f41b2837b6053dbacf243/clinton-avoids-campaign-diet-pitfalls-hot-peppers-yoga
Unlike her self-described "vegan-ish" husband and gluten-free daughter, aides say Clinton doesn't follow a specific diet plan. Instead, they say, she goes by the general rule of "if it looks bad for you, it's probably bad for you."
Her one secret: Raw hot peppers. At a farm stand in Davenport, Iowa, this fall, Clinton detailed scientific research on the health effects of spicy food, telling a cashier that she finds eating raw jalapenos "so refreshing."
"During 2008, there was not a day or a minute that went by that we didn't have a full plate of raw jalapenos," said Jamie Smith, a 2008 campaign aide, who once received a pep talk from Clinton about her inability to handle their heat. "She ate them like potato chips."

#hotsaucereceipts from 2012 lol >> Hillary Clinton Rarely Listens to Her iPod, Always Packs Tabasco Sauce http://www.cntraveler.com/stories/2012-08-30/hillary-clinton-interview-visionaries
We asked Secretary Clintons office what she always packs:
A small mesh bag filled with the basics: Sharpies, Advil, sunscreen. Converters to charge her BlackBerry and iPad anywhere in the world. Red pepper flakes and a mini bottle of Tabasco Sauce for adding spice to her meals.

I doubt the owners set up a high overhead shop there expecting a lot of crosstown traffic.

(53,866 posts)it's incredibly demeaning to the intelligence of the black/POC voter when one says that Hillary is pandering because of hot sauce, right?
For people to imply this is pandering, as though voters are so dumb they'll switch allegiance because of hot sauce, is insulting.
(Incidentally, some of the whitest people i know carry Sriracha on their key chains. It's really not that uncommon.)

(5,761 posts)Have you watched the interview? You realize she said this on a AA program, right?
You think we're insulting POC yet Hillary gets a pass with "CP time" & "superpredators".
Fascinating.

(53,866 posts)I also know that she has spoken about her love of chilies before and AA aren't so dumb as to get swayed by hot sauce. that's what is so offensive about this.

We'll all be shocked - shocked!!! - when those NY votes start coming in tomorrow, as millions of former HRCers vote for Bernie, now that they've seen the extent of Hill's pandering ways.

(6,979 posts)That Hillary Clinton has eaten spicy foods for years. Carried hot sauce in her purse as well. But, when somebody doesn't believe that and there is evidence of her doing that dating back several years written up by the press, it doesn't make sense to argue because some don't WANT to accept facts
