If it happens, the backlash from the extreme Right will be furious.
It would not matter that such a win would be entirely Constitutional
It would not matter that such a win is based on the the notion of States as sovereign entities (a Right-wing sacred cow)
they will claim that the Will of the People has been subverted.
Face it: the only outcome that would satisfy the Republican base is Romney in the White House because they are Republicans first and Americans Second.
