2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe only way we can lose this fight is if we give up!
In anticipation of the upcoming election and on the heels of a conversation I had with some friends at my job, I have noticed a sense of frustration, dread & despair from many of my friends of the liberal persuasion. I keep hearing over and over that things never do or never will change for the better, coupled with complaints that things are so effed up that they'll never be fixed. The reason for this they tell me is because people these days are so effed up (ie racist, disrespectful, misogynistic, bigoted zealots). As usual the conversation we had got me thinking
mostly about the reasons why I disagree with their sentiments.
Whether or not Barack Obama wins on November 6 and regardless of the fact that for instance, the recall in Wisconsin failed in June, things can and will change for the better
if we stick together, preserver and do not give in to despair & cynicism. What tells me in my gut that change is possible is that 1. We are NOT THE SAME PEOPLE WE WERE 4 years ago--we are, among other things, stronger & smarter. And B. the majority of young people today do not buy into the same bigotry, racism and disrespect that so sadly their parents & grandparents subscribe to.
If you still find yourself doubting that true change is possible, reacquaint yourself with the story of the Little Rock Nine. http://www.encyclopediaofarkansas.net/encyclopedia/entry-detail.aspx?entryid=723
Imagine if back in 1957; after being turned away by the National Guard, then requiring US Army escorts to and around school, while enduring horrible abuse from angry mobs, and fellow students day in and day out, all 9 of them just threw up their hands and said This is too hard! I GIVE UP! Think of all that we take for granted today because these 9 brave young men and women persevered and fought for what they knew were their rights as American Citizens.
No matter what happens over the next couple of weeks, dont give in to cynicism and dont give up fighting to make America great for everyone who lives here. Because the only way we can lose this fight is if we give up.

Well stated. I too fear that indifference will be the downfall of this election.
Republicans suppress the vote because they are seriously outnumbered in this country. They discovered long ago that when more people vote, more democrats get elected. Republicans vote as a birthright, democrats vote on a whim or when angered.
GOTV.

(9,137 posts)I come from culture that is not unlike amerindian cultures, and we have in our backbones that to fight is to "lose", and yet we keep on" "fighting". I don't expect white middle class liberal "america" to comprehend.
Edit: or even to listen.
