2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumCalling for Bernie to drop out is silly
His staying in won't throw the election to Trump. Hillary should be able to beat Trump handily, if only because he's the most wildly undisciplined candidate in history. The republican party is split and these are rifts that are not easily healed. Bernie isn't hurting her simply by staying in until all the primaries are over. He's not going to drop out no matter how plaintive your cries. Just be patient. He will endorse her and he will campaign for her. Having won, it would be wiser to demonstrate a wee bit of graciousness, and stop excoriating Bernie and all of us- his supporters.
It's one thing to be a sore loser. Being a sore winner is just counter productive.

(68,918 posts)The debates alone will be a horror show for the GOP. I refuse to freak out. Go Bernie. Thank you for doing what you said you would. It's refreshing to see a politician keep his word.

(1,048 posts)Besides, it shows how much more sane our party is. Its fine for Bernie and Hillary to have different visions. They are still the adults in the room. Hillary has been dealing with criticism for how many years? What Sanders is throwing at her is nothing to compared what Trump is going to. She will be fine. The party will be fine in the end, but I do think the party needs to find a way to combine the needs of the expanding liberal base.

She will not, so...

(587 posts)Everyone knows he cannot win.
Everyone knows he will ultimately support Clinton, campaign for her, and promote her.
Given the axiomatic nature of the two prior statements, what does he have to gain by staying in? All he is doing is causing divisiveness. There is no positive effect and a large negative effect.
The only reason to stay in is personal movies, ego, money, etc. It can't be anything else.

(8,401 posts). . . but about influencing the party platform. He and his supporters will have zero leverage if he drops out now.

(23,156 posts)Actually, she stayed in through the last primary that year.
I'm in a state that has yet to have its primary, and if I don't get to vote for my choice in my primary, then Hillary clearly won't need my vote in November.
Jim Lane
(11,175 posts)For people who would vote for Clinton only with the nose held very firmly closed, it's easier to do that if one has had the chance to express one's real preference by voting against her in the primary.
Furthermore, Bernie has energized many new voters. Some of them, if Clinton is the nominee, will go back to seeing only two corporate parties that don't care about them, and won't vote in the fall -- but at least some of them will stay involved enough to vote for Clinton, however unenthusiastically.
(Side note to the admins: The DU spell checker red-flags "unenthusiastically". If Clinton is the nominee, you're gonna have to fix that.)
Even in the states that have already voted, Bernie's supporters are more likely to vote for Clinton in November if they feel that Bernie has been treated fairly. If he's pressured to drop out, it will leave a sour taste in many mouths.
You complain that he's "causing divisiveness." No, he's not causing it, he's capitalizing on it. The divisiveness was always there. Back when I had no idea that Bernie would actually run, I was unhappy with the prospect of Clinton as our nominee, because of her conservatism -- and I think there are millions of other people who felt the same way.

(4,407 posts)I don't know how the general will go, but it seems like Trump has a *lot* of material, starting will Hillary endangering the nation with classified information on an unsecured server. The Hillary camp telling Bernie to drop out is setting up an excuse for why Hillary would lose so they don't need to confront the fact that she is a severely flawed candidate, even after she loses.
Setting the blame!

(68,689 posts)with Bernie's Continuing attacks on Hillary and the Democratic Party as a whole. He did not win by enough to make up the pledged delegate deficit...he will not get supers although I see some person has posted their personal info here which is wrong by the way and dangerous. Bernie needs to get out. No point hanging around until California. The GOP has their candidate; we need ours, and it won't be Bernie Sanders.

(68,689 posts)So yes, every time he opens his mouth, he helps Trump. Now that Trump is the nominee, Bernie needs to do the right thing and concede.

We've got two strong candidates, and that beats the zeros on the other side of the aisle. We can have our coronation at the convention, whereupon both our strong candidates will be working to ensure our nominee's victory.
