2016 Postmortem

Hillary Clinton, 7 September, 2015
Far from it. The OIG report sharply refutes that lie of Hillary's and there is no way to spin her statement as anything but a bald faced lie. Certainly not the only lie she told about her email imbroglio.
The report is a portrait of Clinton that paints her as imperious, dishonest, secretive, disloyal and someone with seriously flawed judgment.
In March of this year, the Washington Post, published a history of the email tale:
<snip>
One year earlier, during her own presidential campaign, Clinton had said that if elected, we will adopt a presumption of openness and Freedom of Information Act requests and urge agencies to release information quickly.
But in those first few days, Clintons senior advisers were already taking steps that would help her circumvent those high-flown words, according to a chain of internal State Department emails released to Judicial Watch, a conservative nonprofit organization suing the government over Clintons emails.

Ironic, no? Why should anyone believe her campaign promises this year?
She was warned in no uncertain terms. The following can also be found at the link posted above:
<snip>
Our review reaffirms our belief that the vulnerabilities and risks associated with the use of Blackberries in the Mahogany Row [redacted] considerably outweigh the convenience their use can add, the memo said.
He emphasized: Any unclassified Blackberry is highly vulnerable in any setting to remotely and covertly monitoring conversations, retrieving e-mails, and exploiting calendars.
Nine days later, Clinton told Boswell that she had read his memo and gets it, according to an email sent by a senior diplomatic security official. Her attention was drawn to the sentence that indicates (Diplomatic Security) have intelligence concerning this vulnerability during her recent trip to Asia, the email said.
But Clinton kept using her private BlackBerry and the basement server.
<snip>
It's damning, and clear, that Clinton had no intention of turning her emails over to archivists. She didn't while she was in office, and she didn't after she left office until forced to.
<snip>
In December 2012, near the end of Clintons tenure, a nonprofit group called Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, or CREW, filed a FOIA request seeking records about her email. CREW received a response in May 2013: no records responsive to your request were located.
Other requests for Clinton records met the same fate until the State Department received a demand from the newly formed House Select Committee on Benghazi in July 2014. The committee wanted Clintons email, among other things, to see what she and others knew about the deadly attack in Libya and the response by the U.S. government.

A few more bullet points:
She has not turned over the entirety of her work mail according to the OIG report. Months are missing from early 2009.
Staff who raised concerns about her email setup were told to shut the fuck up.
She lied repeatedly about attempted hacks.
The comparison to Powell is weak.

Trust and Hillary Clinton are two words that don't co-exist.

(10,559 posts)But I think the FBI is going to explain "illegal" and "indictment" to her. My gut is a behind the scenes plea deal, with some face saving health issues as a public excuse.
The only question is whether it is before or after she destroys the Party.

(5,455 posts)Everything I've heard and read indicates that Comey would not allow the FBI to be party to a cover up or deal that would allow HRC to leave the Presidential race without facing charges. Doing so would damage both the FBI's reputation and Comey's reputation for being apolitical as Director of the FBI.

(17,064 posts)What does Obama and DoJ have to gain by squashing an indictment? I'm of the belief that Obama is rather tired of Clinton's act, and would just as soon cast her adrift. Maybe some of his Wall St buddies are pressuring him to save her for their own sake, but doing so would be blood in the water to Republican sharks. Obama covering up Clinton crimes would be a trifecta....it's Benghazi with 100 gallons of gasoline poured on it....during an election season. I can't see Obama walking in to that trap just to save Clintons skin.

(13,390 posts)"Having an affair is not illegal." They really pushed to make it seem like that was the whole story, and I fell for it. With more maturity, the way I see it now is that it wasn't impeachment worthy, but yeah, Clinton broke the law while POTUS.
That they used unethical and even illegal behavior to cultivate loyalty has to be some of the most cynical political maneuvering I have seen.

(8,232 posts)The Secretary of State runs the State Department. In this regard I believe at the bottom line the Secretary of State determines what the State Department allows....
It all gets a bit circular at this point.

quaker bill
(8,232 posts)that the Secretary has no role in determining what the State Department "allows"?
I think the Secretary probably determines at some level what the State Department "allows", which is why this statement is a lame excuse. "I let myself do it" therefore everything is OK?
The law is the law, and things do not become legal because the executive "allows" them.

(17,064 posts)Even the SoS must follow the law. The Dept rules in place are to ensure compliance with the laws. While Clinton could seek to change the rules, the proposed changes would have to be run by legal and security departments to make sure the legal end was still covered. There is no evidence that she did so.

(26,549 posts)The hierarchies are not that linear. For example, the NSA is responsible for all government computer security policies. Including the State department's. Being SoS did not let Clinton overrule their policies.

(3,089 posts)uses his Blackberry and did then too. Private e-mails were in use by every SOS since Albright because the DOS computer systems were outdated, weak, and vulnerable. Albright, Rice, Powell, and Kerry until recently has used private e-mail. HRC has said she made a mistake and was wrong, however she conducted not official government on her private server. Her server was never hacked...attempts made but never succeeded..unlike other government accounts severely hacked. Clinton didn't knowingly and intentionally turn over or share security information with a paramour or other un-cleared individual.
Get over it. She made a mistake using her personal server..the only information classified was classified AFTER she left office.

(2,145 posts)I've come to realize that many people just don't read politics. In the end, I'll be surprised if any of this changes anything. I'm not sure Bernie will know what to do. It is all about judgement again. But he's so close to end that he's kind of stuck. Make a big deal and hurt her and alianate voters maybe or don't make a big deal and we'll have even more reason to worry about the next POTUS. This is about trust.

(9,233 posts)but may end up losing the POTUS to Trump so we all will pay for the vanity of Clinton and her strong supporters.
This will cascade down through the Democratic part of the ballot.
The loss will be blamed on the liberals and Sanders supporters, of course.
The powers that be of money and power want Clinton but prefer Trump to Sanders.
Interesting to see if Clinton is replaced by Biden or other. I would much prefer Kerry over Biden.

I really hope she has the character to drop out if a request for indictment is returned...but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.
PufPuf23
(9,233 posts)Hillary Clinton will only drop out is forced to by Democratic leadership (say by leaders condemning and votes of super-delegates) or indictment and arrest.
If elected POTUS, Clinton will be on the ropes against the GOP from day one and will face the onslaught having birned her bridges with close to half her own party at the grassroots.
