2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe First Sanders Democrat Just Won Her Congressional Primary
Bernie Sanders is passing the torch of his political revolution onto Congressional candidates around the country, and one of them just won her primary race.
Zephyr Teachout, who is running as a Democrat in New Yorks 19th Congressional District, was announced the winner over her opponent Will Yandik with a 47-point advantage in a 73-26 rout with 42 of 509 precincts reporting.
Teachout, a law professor at Fordham University, has statewide recognition in New York as a result of her 2014 campaign for governor, in which she captured 34.43 percent of the vote. Teachouts victory this year is hardly a surprise, as she most recently dominated polls with a 39-point lead over Yandik.
(snip)
On her website, Teachouts issue positions closely mirror Sanders positions. Shes on the record supporting public campaign financing and a reversal of the Citizens United vs. FEC court decision that opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending in elections. She also wants to pass legislation that would force members of Congress to wait several years before becoming lobbyists. She also opposes the Trans-Pacific Partnership, wants to ensure universal access to broadband internet, and supports strengthening background checks for gun purchases. Shes also in favor of making it easier for workers to organize unions in the workplace.

But by all means, please feel free to make Sanders the hero if that makes your day more cheerful.

(6,444 posts)You could've chosen to say, "it sounds like you are criticizing Bernie." They would've answered: "No I was criticizing the giving of credit to Bernie for this win, there were other factors involved."
Then you would have said what: "I can give credit to Bernie if I wannna! , He did it, he did it, he and his "populist" Revolution! I am telling you this is all on Bernie, so shut up! and you better give your Heartfelt gratitude to Bernie. This is all Bernie!

I voted for Yandic yesterday, but Teachout won! This is my district. I know what happened here!
She had more name recognition because of her loss to Cuomo in 2014.

(1,364 posts)I will share this with you all. I am an Election Inspector and in our session yesterday, there were 10 of us workers, evenly split between parties. In conversations with them over the day, I found that all of them liked Bernie, even the Repugs, and if he were on the GE ballot would vote for him. Wanted to even write-in. The dislike of Hillary is palpable. One strange convo was with a lady Dem who insisted that Obama was a secret Muslim and had inserted them all through government. I had to remind her that religious affiliation was not a factor for office, according to the Constitution. OY the stupid, it burrrrrrnss.

(161 posts)I voted for Teachout in the 2014 gubernatorial primary vs Cuomo, and I voted for Yandic now. My issue is that the democratic party in the 19th is making a habit of importing someone to run, ignoring great candidates like Will. Teachout was challenged that she was even a New York resident in 2014 with her sporadic record of living in her home in Brooklyn, and now she has rented a small home in Dutchess County while still teaching and living in NY City and that supposedly makes her able to represent this unique patch of the Hudson Valley
Will's family has been farming in Columbia County NY (Not too far from Chris Gibson's Family) for generations, he is a strong candidate with great family. Will has strong roots in the area and wants to build a better life for his husband and just adopted a baby.
I think that Teachout will suffer the same fate as Sean Eldridge, viewed as a carpetbagger that does not represent the people of the district. I have lived almost 20 years in the district, active in politics, church and community and still viewed as a newcomer. Even through by wife's family built the business that is the economic engine of the area.
Well Will is a young man, hopefully when Teachout moves on to her next challenge (and yes I will vote for her in November) Will will leverage this start into a successful run

(1,364 posts)It's very rednecky. Not exactly what I would call Vermont-ish. We have had nothing but RW nuts for decades. Look at the current office holder, a military retiree who votes against veterans. Yesterday, my precinct, Cobleskill, voted 10-1 ratio for Teachout, and in 2014, the county Dems went for her over Cuomo. During the primary, the county went 63.63% for Bernie, he also carried Upstate excepting for Buffalo, Syracuse, and Rochester. Binghamton, Albany, Ithaca went heavily for Bernie. AND, Yandik was running at a huge disadvantage by being a married gay man and he and his husband have a child. In 2014, Sean Eldridge, another married gay man, also lost. Hugely. And, it was because of the gay card. So, many things have entered into this race and the answers are not so simplistic.

(21,787 posts)the "carpetbagger" meme on Teachout?
Has he actually lived in the 19th district himself?
Bohunk68
(1,364 posts)he is from Kinderhook, which is at the extreme eastern end of the district. I will be supporting Teachout for the GE. Need to get a yard sign. I have to be careful about having any political signs on my vehicle when I am actually working as EI. Park far enough away, for instance. I went and checked, and, yes, he is from Kinderhook. Kinderhook was the East Camp for the Palatines when they migrated in 1708.

Judging from the article and comments, it appears Faso will indeed try to hang the carpetbagger meme on Teachout; however, one commenter claims he's worse than Chris Gibson but is far more honest about his tea-baggery.

(10,476 posts)Let's look and see what real media has to say;
But Eric Kingson, a professor whom Sanders not only endorsed but campaigned for this month, lost his primary in the 24th Congressional District. Colleen Deacon, a former aide to Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, easily prevailed in the three-way race, boosted by support from most of New York's top Democrats and party leaders in Washington, D.C.
...
Flores, a former state assemblywoman who had attracted national attention in previous races, lost a competitive primary to State Sen. Ruben Kihuen two weeks ago. Kihuen was backed by establishment Democrats, including Bill Clinton and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada's most powerful politician.

(10,476 posts)and ignore the rest, as it portrays Sanders' coattails much more favorably than they really are. Also, Teachout had wide recognition in New York well before this year's presidential primary; I find that labeling her a "Sanders Democrat", as if it was his guiding hand that helped her victory, a wee bit patronizing.

(58,361 posts)Two months ago, Democratic congressional candidate Eric Kingson was fighting to stay on the primary ballot.
Now, he's hoping to pull off an upset that would shake up the 24th Congressional District race.
(snip)
The favorite to win Tuesday's primary is Colleen Deacon, a former aide to U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand who has received support from the party's establishment.
A poll released by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which endorsed Deacon, showed her leading the race by 33 points over Steve Williams, another candidate seeking the party's nomination, and 42 points over Kingson.

Kingston was 42 points behind and projected to come in third in a three person race.
24th Congressional District Democratic Primary: Colleen Deacon has declared victory. "It is clear we are going to be the winners," she told supporters just after 10:30 pm Tuesday.
99% reporting
Colleen Deacon 49%
Eric Kingson 32%
Steve Williams 19%
The winner faces incumbent Republican Congressman John Katko in November. The 24th Congressional District includes all of Cayuga, Onondaga, and Wayne counties, and the western part of Oswego County.

Kingston came in second with a 17 point loss but that's still a 25 point gain, I have no doubt Bernie's endorsement was a major reason for that.

Uncle Joe
(58,361 posts)Though she ran her campaign on a shoestring and with scarcely any organizational support, Ms. Teachout was on pace to record the strongest challenge to an incumbent governor since primaries for the office were established in New York in 1970.
There have been only two other major-party primaries against governors seeking re-election since then, and both failed: In 1994, Lenora B. Fulani received 20.5 percent against Gov. Mario M. Cuomo. And in 1978, Lt. Gov. Mary Anne Krupsak received 33.7 percent in a challenge to Gov. Hugh L. Carey.
Ms. Teachout carried counties in large portions of New York, from the Canadian border to New York Citys northern suburbs. She and Mr. Wu, who were endorsed by one of the major unions of state workers, also ran away with the race in Albany County and much of the capital region.
Sounding jubilant, Ms. Teachout gave what sounded like a victory speech. I will not be your next governor, but the Democrats of this state have been heard, she told supporters jammed into a nightclub in Manhattan.

Zephyr will be a formidable candidate in the general election, I'm happy Bernie endorsed Teachout and apparently the Democrats did listen to her as she won with 70+% of the voters.
Thanks for the addition, Her Sister.
