Progressive Groups Collect Hundreds of Thousands of Signatures Calling on Pelosi to Oppose TPP Vote

Press Call Thursday: Digital Rights and Progressive Groups Collect Hundreds of Thousands of Petition Signatures Calling on Democratic Leader Pelosi to Publicly Oppose TPP Lame-Duck Vote
Common Dreams

A coalition of major digital rights and progressive organizations from OpenMedia and the Electronic Frontier Foundation to Daily Kos, Demand Progress, and Corporate Accountability International

have collected hundreds of thousands of petition signatures calling on Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi to publicly declare her opposition to a lame-duck vote on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

The coalition is also urging Pelosi to lead House Democrats to defeat the pact that threatens Internet freedom, good jobs, higher wages, affordable medicines, and strong climate and environmental policies that Democrats espouse. With a lack of congressional support and presidential politics fanning public opposition, the only chance for congressional consideration of the TPP in 2016 would be in a post-election “lame-duck” session.

WHEN: 1 p.m. EST, Thursday, July 7

Speakers:

Guest Speaker: Ed Schultz, Political Commentator, The Ed Schultz Show
Emma Einhorn, Washington Coordinator, MoveOn
Murshed Zaheed, Vice President and Political Director, Credo Action
Jeremy Malcolm, Senior Global Policy Analyst, Electronic Frontier Foundation
Robert Borosage, Founder and President, Campaign for America’s Future
David Segal, Co-Founder and Executive Director, Demand Progress
Jesse Bragg, Media Director, Corporate Accountability International

and it will continue to hurt American and foreign workers, import/export, the environment, the right to collectively bargain, and allow corporate profits to challenge a nation's regulations - and win.

Under the old (NAFTA) provisions without the TPP, corporations can continue to sue nations, as was the case in Metclad v Mexico, where a corporation was given a $15 million dollar judgment - that the Mexican people are on the hook for. TPP would have prevented that.

Is the TPP perfect? Heck no. But it's a huge improvement over the past CAFTA and NAFTA trade pacts.
