Trump Strategy Relies on Attacking the Media

Newt Gingrich told the Washington Post that Donald Trump’s war against the media is part of his political calculation.

Said Gingrich: “He has concluded that you guys in the media will kill him unless he destroys your credibility. Guaranteeing that the media is not believable is a significant building block of this campaign, as important as showing that Hillary Clinton is corrupt.”

And if they aren't credible, they aren't credible about Hillary either. Newt calls someone else corrupt?

Trump attacks the media for two reasons: it's a very popular thing to do, and it get's lots of free coverage, he dominates the conversation 24/7, any thing at all comes up we hear what Trump thinks about it.

But then Newt is saying what Trump wants him to say, because they don't want to wise the media up, they want the media to keep covering him 24/7.

What I think is essential is that Trump is manipulating them for his own purposes, and to that extent the OP is correct.
