2016 Postmortem

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm going to be turning on CSPAN and checking in on the GOP convention whenever I possibly can. I've been watching presidential nomination conventions on TV for as long as I can remember, starting with Eisenhower's time. They have fascinated me for decades. This year, with Donald Trump as the star, the GOP convention promises everything a reality show needs. It should be a non-stop laugh-fest, with party bigwigs forced to accept the nomination of an orange-haired baboon as the party's candidate. The people have spoken and they've demanded an idiot to represent them. What could be better?
It's can't-miss television. Tune in and prepare for non-stop viewing pleasure.

THAT was the exciting moment.

(50,271 posts)I've got a bad feeling though. I worry that activity outside the convention might get more attention than anything going on inside which would be a huge benefit to the Trumpenfuhrer. Which reminds me. Has the Donald been disappeared? I think he's gone more than 24 hours without a bizarre statement. Maybe they've got him locked in a room somewhere.

(115,691 posts)since for the most part they have become just big, bloated, boring infomercials. They were much more interesting in the olden days when the delegates actually fought over things instead of just rubber-stamping what's already been decided. I probably won't watch much of the Dem convention - maybe a speech or two. But the GOPers - that's a whole 'nother show. It will be more like finding yourself as a gawker at a train wreck. It's horrible but you can't make yourself stop watching because it's also fascinating and weird.
I'll need lots of popcorn, I think.

(7,813 posts)public discourse and media drama. It will be a low point for our country...something to be embarrassed about. Behavior of the gop and the state of journalism has been an embarrassment for quite a while and this will highlight it. I wish media were capable of giving it proper perspective and ridicule every lie, hyperbole, ignorant statement, and manipulative deception, but they won't.
I'll follow highlights with disgust, probably much through DU, NYT and TPM, but wish they were contributing to democracy/public discourse rather than polluting it.

(58,785 posts)it'll definitely have lots of can't-miss moments. I'm really looking forward to it and will be recording the whole thing and watching all the finest.
How reality-TV pro Trump restyles the Republican National Convention should be entertaining in a horrifying, surreal way all by itself. This is an American institution after all. On the plus side, Trump's kids will be featured, and I wouldn't miss boxing promoter Don King's speech for anything.
