2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumBehind the scenes: How Hillary won over Bernie
It was an endorsement nearly one month in the making. Bernie Sanderss vocal backing of Hillary Clinton on Tuesday in Portsmouth, N.H., came after weeks of delicate conversations between the two camps, sources say.
Those talks which involved Clinton, Sanders and his wife, Jane, and top campaign officials centered on the question of how to continue pushing the progressive agenda that both candidates touted during their long, and at times bitter, presidential primary battle.
A critical moment in the process, Clinton aides said Tuesday, was the meeting between the two candidates last month at the Washington Hilton. The talk helped to break the ice, with Sanders campaign manger Jeff Weaver and Clinton manager Robby Mook staying at the hotel for another two hours to discuss how they could bring the two sides together, including on issues like Sanders's preference for tuition-free college.
In the weeks after that initial meeting, Mook and Weaver continued the conversation in a string of calls and text messages. Last month, they had a one-on-one dinner at the Farmhouse Tap and Grill in Burlington, Vt., one Clinton aide said.

(11,605 posts)He made it clear he is going to keep fighting for what he believes in. He only endorsed after she made some major policy concessions. And if she doesn't stick to them once she's president I'm sure he won't be shy about calling her out for it.
Refusing to endorse would just marginalize him and make it less likely that he would be able to accomplish anything in the Senate or by campaigning for downballot candidates.
Whether he contested the convention or not, she was going to be nominated. I don't see what his refusal to endorse would have done except help Trump.

(11,495 posts)I heard him on the radio in the car today, and I am pleased with what he said. I too look forward to him hitting the trail with President Obama, Warren, Joe, and Hillary. I think he will help to get out the voters that followed him, and hopeful get the younger voters to the polls.

Anyone who says Trump is better is a damn fool.

(68,667 posts)This is called compromise. And Hillary did not sell her soul to big money either. No one could find one example of where she received money and did any favors. Bernie had a self-funded campaign for the presidential nomination , but he has received money during his Senate campaigns. A Democratic president is always better. Consider Bill Clinton...he had his flaws but we have Ginsberg and Breyer thanks to him...who do you support BushI would have nominated?

(6,402 posts)the primaries produce such hilarity sometimes.

(37,428 posts)His running as a Democrat was a tacit pro ise to endorse the primary winner, and he knew better than any of us what a long shot his candidacy was. If that wadn't enough, he and Clinton both explicitly pledged to support the primary winner. To paraphrase the old joke, they've just been dickering over price. I don't mean a price for endorsement, but rather the laying out of a common message in detail. The platform is a written commitment to ideals, but the candidates have doubtless planned their assault together and have gotten to know each other better.
This was no mere month-long drama.

(58,704 posts)the two campaigns were always running in parallel on progressive lines that were far closer together than anything the Repubs have offered, assuming Trump has any policies, that is. How anyone can say with a straight face that Trump is somehow more trustworthy than Hillary would be hilarious if they weren't serious.
