There are some indications that other people were approached, and that they accepted. General Michael Flynn made a sudden and public move against abortion this week. Pam Bondi went out on a limb to protect Trump from his University scandal in Florida. Gingrich stopped taking money from Fox News--and you know that sociopath Gingrich didn't make that move without being promised something for it.

Trump is notorious for securing commitments from people before he makes a choice, so any one of these moves could be explained away in retrospect as his usual manipulative behavior. Not a great way of making friends, to be sure, but also well within Trump's playbook.

The good news is that it looks like a fair number of assholes are going to be harmed by Trump's eventual choice. Can't ask for more than that.

Would it surprise me if he made completely out of left fucking field choice like Sarah Palin? Not in the least.

Of course, he didn't say Pence, so that might not be his choice.

It could be the media is wrong, they bearly know how to dig for a story. But my first reaction was Trump saw everybody recoil from the Pence idea and he's using the horrible attack in Nice as cover to make a different pick.
