2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumDid you guys see this? Jeff Weaver working for Hillary.
http://www.politico.com/story/2016/07/jeff-weaver-clinton-votes-225465Like the senator I am fully behind the secretary and certainly I will make known to all the Bernie supporters around this country who know me very well -- and have received emails from me from the last year plus -- that I am certainly on fully on board as well, Weaver said.
Story Continued Below
The announcement, which comes with Sanders' official endorsement of Clinton as the Democratic nominee, is another indication of how the Vermont senator's team will work on behalf of the former secretary of state in the general election fight against Donald Trump. Weaver will not be joining the Clinton campaign, however.
I think the senators intentions is to stump quite heavily for the secretary all across the country, obviously and specifically in the battleground states. In addition to that, hell be campaigning for down-ballot progressive Democrats in states all across the country whether they are battlegrounds or not in battlegrounds. I think you are going to see a lot of Senator Sanders on the stump, Weaver told Playbook.
I may have missed this posted on DU - sorry if it's been discussed.
I was not a fan of Weaver's strategies throughout the primary (didn't think they were effective) and I hope he does better for Hillary. I don't have a great feeling about this guy.

(4,311 posts)I don't know that I trust Weaver to put a good strategy together.
I'm not refighting the primaries - I just don't have a lot of faith in the guy to do a good job.

(30,481 posts)There is a special yet small group of people out there that play an enormous role in major campaigns. I wouldn't trust any of them but their work helps in big campaigns.
Weaver helped to establish a new and impressive online network. It wasn't enough for Sanders but it's a very solid system. I think Weaver is a low-life but I also think he can provide value.

(70,413 posts)I do not think that I trust him either but he does seem to have some organizing skills and there are probably sanders supporters who do trust him--which will help Hillary.

(36,490 posts)The kindest words one could say of Sanders' efforts were, "To little, to late". There was a big shakeup with Sanders' staff toward the end, and I assume Weaver prevailed and delivered; he deserves credit.

I hope they keep Weaver in a deep dark place - only to see daylight on payday then back in the dark. Then fire him on election day.

(11,607 posts)How is he an opportunist? Staying with the same politician for so many years suggests the opposite, IMO.

(4,311 posts)I'm aware he was running a campaign. I'm aware he is not running Hillary's campaign.
I don't understand what that has to do with being concerned that he is working for Hillary's campaign and I didn't think much of his strategies in the primary campaign?

(2,897 posts)I disliked him during the primaries and I felt that as a voter, he didn't particularly make me want to vote for Bernie any whenever he opened his mouth. As long as he's in the background and muzzled so as not to create any unnecessary scandals on the campaign.

(1,630 posts)or act as a strategist in Hillary's campaign as he did in Bernie's. He can be helpful because he is associated with Bernie's brand and make appearances that represent/speak to that coalition. He can also handle some of the Sander's data management/sharing that is typical in the post primary segue into the GE.

(34,185 posts)A lot of Bernie supporters truthfully say they support HRC, but their energy level and commitment to showing up at the polls may be weaker than those numbers suggest. Tuesday was a mixed day for many Democrats who supported Bernie.
And Weaver knows Bernie supporters and how to psych them up. Also, this is why it is important for HRC that Bernie keep talking about how he fought for and won on getting some of his agenda into the platform. Some may complain about "ownership issues", but its going to be important to a lot of Bernie supporters to feel as if they have something invested in voting for HRC.

Weaver was and is likely still not a "friend" to Hillary, but he values his employment check so I suppose it's a win/win?

(11,607 posts)I think since he got elected to Congress. I guess either a) putting him on the staff was something Hillary agreed to in her negotiations with Bernie, or b) Weaver and Bernie had a falling out and he's looking for new employment.

Maybe I am a little too trusting, but, I think he is sincere in his intentions. Otherwise, no one will want to work with him in the future. We shall see....

(9,688 posts)I don't think he was effective as a campaign manager. In general, not ready for prime time.
People like Robby Mook way, way outclass him in expertise and savvy.
I really hope that Weaver does not play a significant role in Hillary's campaign. If he's mainly going to be arranging for Bernie's speeches in the GE, OK. But more than that? I hope not.
