I doubt he would be there.

The only prior POTUS or VPOTUS or nominee that would attend the republican convention would be Darth Cheney.

Political etiquette dictates that sitting cabinet members and other high ranking administration officials (besides the president and vice president) don't go out and campaign. Sort of a country before party kind of thing. Condi Rice got a lot of flack in 2004 for giving stump speeches for Bush while also being the National Security Advisor.

You saved me the trouble of having to write my own post!
And the logic you outlined applies most of all to the Secretary of State. When I'd heard Sec. Kerry quizzed about partisan politics on various TV interviews over the last year, he seemed even relieved to be able to tell the interviewer that he's not allowed to comment about these things in his current position. (He did report that people in other countries have been telling him how alarmed they are about the Trump candidacy).
