So Trump is betting a plurality or majority of Americans

So Trump is betting a plurality or majority of Americans believe that we are a weak nation where law and order has broken down, our enemies laugh at us, our economy is at the point of a melt down and only a strong man like him can fix it.

That is Trumpism in a nutshell.

Reminds me of when Joe Louis was asked how he could support a nation and don its uniform in WW ll when the nation for whom he was donning its uniform consigned him to second class citizenship. The Bronx Bomber replied "Ain't nothing Hitler can fix."

I despise Trump. He is sui generis, in a bad way. I vehemently disagree with Republicans but Trump is the worst of the worst. For all their flaws and they were manifest at least Nixon, Bush, and Reagan paid lip service to the rule of law and democratic norms.

Trump is a dagger targeted at the heart of democracy.

Trump is a result of people at war with modernity, tolerance, and heterogeneity. They long for a simpler time that didn't exist or if it existed didn't exist for a lot of people who are now being empowered.

He is being carried, to a large degree, by those whose see others making gains at their expense and those others happen to be women, people of color, and immigrants.

And I summarily reject the notion that America is this dystopian place Trump portrays.

... insurmountably corrupt, weak, and visionless, and then to assert that ONLY TRUMP can lead the US out of his own self-described morass.

This is what tin-horn dictators have done since the beginning of recorded history. And that's exactly what Trump will be if he's elected. Sure, we can hope that the other branches of government will restrain his crazed notion of governance, but Trump can and WILL declare national emergencies to seize control over Congress and the Judiciary. It's the only way he can "WIN". And remember, Trump believes that, above all, he's a "WINNER". It doesn't matter what he wins, and long as he wins. If he says he's going to build a wall, then the ends justify the means. He'll overcome institutional restraints and build the wall. And that will be the end of representative government.

I don't believe your average Trumpist sees the concentration of wealth as a source of his or her problem. They are more content to blame it on the black guy, the Mexican guy, or the woman down the street. All one needs to do is look at his rallies and the who the attendees wrath is aimed at.

consider other straights to be actual humans but you do understand that Reagan aggressively neglected to act while over 30,000 Americans died of AIDS. Reagan said nothing, did nothing for over seven years. A couple of times his press sec told AIDS jokes and they all laughed as Americans died.
So you see, I don't see that as some minor 'flaw' at all. Sorry.

The minute Reagan gets touted, I vomit and walk away.

If you believe stating "I vehemently disagree with Republicans but Trump is the worst of the worst. For all their flaws and they were manifest at least Nixon, Bush, and Reagan paid lip service to the rule of law and democratic norms. " is tantamount to supporting Reagan there is nothing I can do to disabuse you of that notion.

Reagan sucked. Trump represents incipient fascism.

Lots of retired docs and lawyers, millionaires former biz owners pumping Trump. I have also seen underemployed whites--male and female--going Trump. This focus on poor whites is out of touch--the Tumper are the usual Republicans, that's all; nothing new. The only dif is that establishment figures are pissed they didn't get their way--so they, and some old fashion paleo-conserves, are against him.

Thank you for that quote, and kudos to the Brown Bomber for putting his military service into context.

Donald Trump's rhetoric does not accurately identify America's problems, and he certainly isn't the person to "fix" what ails us. If anything, Trump is the embodiment of what's wrong with our country.

Louis, the great heavyweight champion, had become in the 1930's a national hero, to whites as well as blacks, by virtue of his fists and his demeanor. When he knocked out Max Schmeling, Hitler's Ubermensch, in the first round in 1938, he was hailed as emblematic of a powerful America. And while he was unlettered, he was knowing. Irwin Rosee, a publicist close to Louis, recalls the time another black man objected to Louis's decision to enlist in the Army in 1942. ''It's a white man's Army, Joe, it ain't a black man's Army,'' the man said. Louis looked at him, and explained his decision: ''Lots of things wrong with America, but Hitler ain't going to fix them.''

My friend who is black said the same thing.

He joined the military at 17 in 1951. He was from Selma, Alabama so you know he saw Jim Crow up close and personal. I asked him how he could risk his life for a country that treated him shabbily. He said because he believed in the promise of America. He is an amazing man. He put twenty years in the military and then another twenty years working as civilian with the military. Along the way he made a small investment in a black owned community bank that he parlayed into over a million dollars.

give an audience incredibly biased, strident, polemic reporting -- and worse yet, claim it's "fair and balanced" -- then don't be surprised if a candidate emerges in that same vein, appealing to that same audience.

he *is* fox news in a nutshell.

lies, shouting, interrupting, insults, ridiculous policy positions that appeal not to any critical thinking but only to hate and greed and fear.

even his bragging is typical of fox news.
