Related: About this forumTempers are flying among CNN commentators, but most of them HATE THE SPEECH.
How are the other networks reacting?

(617 posts)He keeps saying that T was yelling the whole time, angry.
Also said that he didn't get the cadence down.
Even said if you say Hillary yells you better be ready to defend Trumps yelling

(6,716 posts)I'm sure clips will be up soon. There are many people on other boards and Twitter more than irritated about it.
tallahasseedem
(6,716 posts)He praised it completely.
piechartking
(617 posts)Chris M was not that effusive
tallahasseedem
(6,716 posts)His praised it, but on a much more monotone level...nothing like I thought he would.

(617 posts)Steve Schmidt: 100% positive - dark, but that's what people are feeling
Chris Matthews: Trump - out of cadence, angry but picked it up in the end.
Chris Matthews: Ivanka - GREAT! SPEECH SCHOOL (whatever the hell that means) MATERIAL
I don't think I'm off here.

(13,340 posts)Sometimes Matthews comes of as actually liking something, when he is just being a cold political wonk. I think he thinks Trump has found a string to pluck on that resonates with some voters. I think Matthews is right about that. But because he thinks a particular tactic works on some voters doesn't mean he AGREES with Trump. In fact, the other night he openly said he supports HRC.

(108,994 posts)and so is Van Jones. (I think that's his name.) Anderson Cooper is negative, too, but his emotions have been more in control.
I forget who said what but I think Van Jones said Trump was worse than George Wallace.

(6,407 posts)He said the speech was a message to White America: Be very afraid, and I will protect you. He also pointed out the angry tone.
The rest of the comments were pretty thin on MSNBC. I was disappointed. I thought the speech was horrid: angry, grating, leaden, singsongy, shallow and stupid, with lots of bull **** and outright lies. No warmth, no feeling of genuine feeling or concern, just empty words and posturing.

(58,724 posts)The main group seemed to think it was effective, though somewhat negative in tone. But they seemed to say that it did lay out his agenda (immigration, crime, trade). With Jeff and Corey thinking it was superb in every respect.
EffieBlack
(14,249 posts)Something that seemed lost on the other panelists - although Anderson Cooper seemed to get it.
This is one of the great frustration for minorities - when faced with ugly bigotry that we recognize and often have a visceral reaction to, too many white folks respond as if it's no big deal, showing absolutely no empathy or even concern that their colleague, the person right next to them is almost in tears.

(4,734 posts)There are reporters on that panel who need to seem somewhat neutral. But John (who ran the panel), Gloria B. definitely leaned against it. Along with Ana and Van.
The two guys from the Trump team loved it, of course.
David Alexrod didn't.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)John, Gloria, David, and Anderson all seemed to think it was an effective speech (along with Jeff and Corey, of course) even if they thought it was negative in tone. Van and Ana were really the only ones who explicitly did not like it.
One of that group said it did a good job of laying out the central issues of his campaign (immigration, crime, jobs, trade, etc.)

(4,734 posts)And there was a tone of skepticism and cynicism within their analysis.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)There was something of that tone in their analysis, but I guess I thought there would be more of a "Good God what have we just seen" reaction from everyone besides the Trump bots.

(108,994 posts)never doom and gloom. And that's what many people loved about him.
Bill was sunny, too, come to think of it. That kind of personality is much more appealing. There is nothing sunny at all about the Trump.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)up angry emotions, appealing to the worst in people. I think he's a salesman who long ago identified a big group of easy marks and has played to it ever since. Trying to lynch those innocent young black guys in NY, birtherism, Mexican rapists, now this overloaded cart of everything all those undeclared John Bircher types loathe and fear.
And that's all he has. It was time to roll out "Morning in America" and he doesn't have it. Because it's not in them to just pump up and exploit.

(279 posts)When asked by Jeff Lord how many gay people were in the crowd (rhetorically), Cooper responded that he saw one for sure. Everyone thought he meant Thiel but he clarified that "No, it was the man in the sequined jacket." Lol.
It got lost in the tempers that were flying back and forth but I appreciated the levity.

(2,897 posts)says everything that you need to know about Trump and his divisive rhetoric. He painted an America, that wasn't in decline because of the actions of (mostly white) oligarchs, billionaires, and politicians, but because of the actions of PoC. It didn't matter whether they were undocumented immigrants trying to make a home or Black citizens protesting police brutality. Donald J. Trump painted us to be the cause of all of America's Ills. You can not be truly say that you are for law and order when you dismiss the findings of the FBI and the Attorney General. He makes me sick.

(58,785 posts)Hillary is the embodiment of everything bad about America. Minorities would be in their Father-Knows-Best place (not in the picture at all), men would be prosperous and confident in their manly roles, and wives would be secure and job- and stress-free -- if it weren't for Hillary and all she stands for.
