2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat were our reactions to selection of Biden over Clinton for VP?
I remember being disappointed and thinking it was a dumb pick for vp. Guess I was wrong then.
Maybe I'll be wrong if it's Kaine.

(17,751 posts)Personally, I didn't want anyone in the cabinet who voted for GeeDubya's war.

(934 posts)Biden voted for the Iraq war AND greased the wheels for Clarence Thomas's confirmation Supreme Court. Did you vote for Obama or was it a deal breaker?

(17,751 posts)Then again, I knew that Obama wasn't the "most liberal senator" as our faithful msm constantly reported.

(934 posts)I think that the media was also scared to death of accidentally saying something offensive and outing their own racial prejudices to the point where they were afraid to question and critique.
Had Biden not been VP, however, we would have missed out on 8 years of this:

She picked the right job.

(934 posts)I didn't want her to be VP. I thought it might be a way to marginalize her.

Not saying we'll like him like that, but at least let's give him a shot.

(1,238 posts)Especially since the shortlist choices were Kaine and Bayh.
Hillary has more experience, so it kinda sucks she's going with Kaine over someone like Perez or Brown.

(42,862 posts)... didn't really matter much to me.
The choice of the person to fill the VP slot really shouldn't be thought of as some "consolation prize" for those who supported a different candidate, in my opinion.
If Hillary was just flipping a coin to make her decision, or if she'd made the decision in just a couple of days, then I'd wonder what was going on. But it's clear that this has been a very thoughtful, thorough and deliberate process. She's much smarter and politically sophisticated than her critics (and other assorted haters) give her credit for. When it comes to what's best for her campaign, and who she admires, and who she thinks she will be able to work well with... there can be no denying that Hillary knows more about that that we do. Whatever decision she has made will be the right one.

(135,425 posts)Not "taco y cerveza" conversational, completely fluent. Plus he's got gubernatorial/executive experience in a fairly complex state, and experience on the Hill in DC. Also, as a former DNC chair, he is wired into the party infrastructure in a very grassroots way.
He is very well-rounded.
If it does turn out to be him, he'll do well, I think.

(617 posts)Everyone who likes trump will show up. White people vote.
She may be experienced and be smart for challenging a traditional candidate, but I worry the old rules don't apply to trump. Just a feeling but my gut could be wrong.

(17,862 posts)Sec State. I don't think she would have gotten what she wanted from the VP. In a sense she had already been a White House staffer as First Lady. Other than the VP's legislative duties (Senate President) the role is kind of like that of a senior staffer anyway. Advise and execute policy of the President without having any actual authority.
SecDefs have their own "ship" to run. It is arguably the most critical Cabinet position (note it is first in succession in the Cabinet). It is a front line, high stakes job.
Biden was a good VP pick. Legislative experience and knowledge and ability to step into the Presidency if required.

(10,857 posts)I was stupid enough to call him a "doofus" right here on DU, and to my horror I saw Karl Rove pick up the term and toss it around on Fox News only days later.
I will forever regret that. And Joe, thanks a lot. You've been great, and I was so wrong.

(82,383 posts)maybe excited someone from my state was actually running for a national office like that. Doesn't happen much to Delaware. That might have figured in. I remember a DU poster who made a post saying it was Biden because they were near Biden's house and it appeared the security apparatus was descending on it.

(9,002 posts)I thought he complimented Obama well - filling in the experience/age/foreign policy gap that would help Obama pull votes from outside the base that was already fired up to get out and vote.
