I don't like what is happening to my diverse little community.
Lafayette is a small "city" between Denver and Boulder. It was at one time a busy coal mine town with eleven mines in the area. It's also mostly working class and ethnically diverse. Although, there are quite a few of high-end homes, we all get along and support our progressive little town. Lately--I'd say the last six weeks or so--I've seen more and more conservative bumper stickers, which is unusual enough to notice. Today, while I parked at the grocery store, I couldn't FIVE either NRA or "Don't Tread On Me" bumper stickers (one truck had both). They were relatively new stickers, I could tell.
One of the problems, I think, is this new super-mega church in town. It promotes itself as "inclusive" but it's not. It's anti-LGBTQ (hate the sin, love the sinner sort of thing). This church is incredibly popular: plays rock music, etc., and brings in a lot of outsiders, although it also seems to appeal to an element in Lafayette. They have a service on Saturday and two on Sunday, along with social activities every night of the week; and they are always packed. Traffic is a nightmare on the weekends and takes several police officers to direct. They are also buying up all the real estate around their church, now owning both sides of the block where the church is located.
The other reason, I'm sure, is the GOP and Trump. Racists and gun-humpers have permission now to show off. I suppose it will get worse before it gets better. It is breaking my heart.
